Lady Redskins Split At Carrollton Tourney

It was an early morning on Saturday, Feb. 1, for the Lady Redskins as they traveled to Carrollton to finish up the tournament. Due to a schedule change earlier in the week, the Skins could have  potentially played two games.

Their first match-up against Granite City would determine if they would be going to be heading home after the 9:30 a.m. game, or competing in the 1 p.m. game against Gateway Legacy Christian Academy for the consolation championship.

As play started against Granite City, it was made clear that it was not going to be easy getting past their aggressive and tall guards as well as their posts.

If the Granite City guards saw an opportunity to drive into the paint and take it to the basket, they definitely did. Their lengthy arms and height difference made it difficult for the Lady Redskins to guard them as they drove, resulting in made layups or free throws for Granite City.

Fortunately for the Lady Redskins, Mia Fesser and Addison Dangbar drained needed threes for the Skins.

But, as the Lady Redskins gained the lead due to fast breaks and ball movement, Granite City would answer with baskets of their own, getting them back into the ball game.

As Granite City tied it up at 32-32 with seconds to go, they also gained the basketball back. The Lady Redskins goal was to not foul, play aggressive defense and not allow a shot. As the seconds ticked down and Granite City set up a last second play, Macee Eisenbarth got a steal and put the ball back into the hands of the Redskins.

With four seconds left, Coach Brandon Engelman called a timeout to plan out a play in order to take the lead. As the Redskins threw the ball in bounds, Macee Eisenbarth shot the ball, it rimmed out, Audrey Sabol got

the rebound, scored and won the game for the Lady Redskins, sending them to compete in the second game.

Addison Dangbar would lead Nokomis with 12 points, while Audrey Sabol added 11.

Unfortunately for the Skins, Gateway Legacy was a completely different team than Granite City and they had their work cut out for them. Gateway Legacy fired up shots every opportunity they got and drained the threes. They also took it strong and aggressively to the basket.

The Lady Redskins, who were worn out from the game before, simply did not have an answer. They were outworked and out hustled by Gateway Legacy, which resulted in them being defeated 55 to 24.

Audrey Sabol had nine for Nokomis, while Macee Eisenbarth followed with seven.

Nokomis will be in Hillsboro on Monday, Feb. 3, for their next game against the Lady Hiltoppers.
