The Nokomis girls basketball team’s undefeated start to the season continued on Thursday, Feb. 11, as the Redskins survived an overtime threat from the South Fork Ponies in a 50-46 affair.
Playing on their home court, the Redskins struggled to get anything going early as they were held to just five points off a three by Addison Dangbar and a two from Emma Sneddon.
Nokomis would begin to find their stroke from behind the arc in the third quarter, with Hailey Engelman (two) and Mia Fesser (one) accounting for nine of Nokomis’ 11 points.
South Fork would match the Redskins point-for-point and led 19-16 after two quarters, but the margin could have been bigger had the Ponies done a little better than their 5-of-11 clip from the free-thow line.
Still, South Fork seemed ready for a fight as they continued to play well in the second half, getting five points from Riley Burney and four from Mia Pop to spark a 16-point third quarter.
Nokomis answered with the inside-outside game of Audrey Sabol, Mia Fesser and Kristen Stauder. Sabol and Fesser would contribute five and four respectively, while Stauder exploded for eight third quarter points. The Redskins would lead 33-32 late, but had to settle for a one-point deficit going into the fourth quarter.
The Ponies would strike first in the fourth quarter, getting back-to-back baskets to make it 39-33. Sabol would answer for the Redskins though, getting a short jumper and a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game.
Hailey Engelman would follow with a lay-up to tie the game, and the Redskins got points from Fesser, Stauder and Sabol to make it a 44-41 game with 2:52 to play.
South Fork just wouldn’t go away though, as Burney and Pop scored all nine of the Ponies’ fourth quarter points, including three free throws that tied the game at 44 with 47 seconds to play.
Nokomis would have a couple good looks in the final 30 seconds, but a runner in the lane bounced off the rim and out of bounds to end regulation at 44-44.
In the extra period, Nokomis scored first with a free throw by Sabol, but South Fork answered with a layup by Jayden Neal to retake the lead at 46-45.
That would be the last points the Ponies would score though as Hailey Engelman gave Nokomis the lead, followed by a basket by Emma Sneddon and a free throw from Addison Dangbar to salt away the four-point overtime victory.
Sabol would finish with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Kristen Stauder added in ten points and nine rebounds, while Hailey Engelman had ten points and a team-best five assists and three steals (Sabol also had three steals for NHS).
Contributions came from up and down Coach Brandon Engelman’s lineup, with Mia Fesser scoring eight points, six off a pair of three-pointers, while Addison Dangbar and Emma Sneddon chipped in four apiece. Dangbar added in nine rebounds as well, as Nokomis finished the game with 43 boards, 14 of which were on the offensive end.
Riley Burney led South Fork with 14 points, followed by Mia Pop with 11.
Nokomis 60, CHBC 50
Nokomis followed that win up with another, beating Cowden-Herrick-Beecher City (CHBC) 60-50.
For the first time in her high school career, sophomore Audrey Sabol topped 20 points in a game, scoring a career-best 26 to go along with 12 rebounds. Sabol scored at least four points in all four quarters, highlighted by eight apiece in the third and fourth quarters.
Kristen Stauder complimented Sabol with ten points, going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line, while Addison Dangbar and Emma Sneddon added in seven points apiece. All of Dangbar’s points came in the first half, helping the Redskins to a 27-18 halftime lead, while Sneddon’s seven second half points helped sew up the ten point win.
Mia Fesser also added in six points, while Emily Cress and Hailey Engelman finished with two points apiece.
Nokomis was scheduled to play Lincolnwood on Feb. 15, but that game was pushed back to Feb. 17 due to weather concerns. The Redskins will also play at East Alton-Wood River on Thursday, Feb. 18.
