With sectionals just two days later, Coach Son Clayton opted to run a slightly limited schedule when the Hillsboro girls track team competed in the South Central Conference Meet on Monday, May 6, on the Toppers' home track.
Even with just seven entries on the day, the Hillsboro girls packed a mighty wallop, coming away with four conference champions, two school records and a conference meet record. The Toppers' four conference champions were the second most behind Litchfield, who had six champions and finished second to overall team champ, Pana.
Senior Kyra Huber would take first in the 100 meters for the fourth consecutive year at the conference meet, running a 12.95 to win by .39 seconds over Pana's Aubrey Beyers.
With the approaching post season, Huber sat out the 200 meters, an event she had won in her sophomore and junior years, but ran the 400, finishing second to Carlinville's Rory Drew.
Drew would finish .43 seconds ahead of Huber, who ran a 59.64 to break Kayleigh McBrain's 13-year-old school record of 1:00, set in 2006.
Kaci Papin would also add her name to the school's record books as she won the high jump with a mark of 5'5", tying the school record, currently held by Kristy Whitley (1997), Haley McCaslin (2016) and Ashlyn Papin (2018), who finished third at the conference meet with a mark of 4'10".
For the second consecutive year, senior Kylie Meier would take first in the triple jump, posting a mark of 31'11.50" to win by 20 inches. It was just the third time this year that Meier has competed in the triple jump, with injuries keeping the Topper jumper out of the event for a good portion of the season.
Hillsboro's other individual entry would be Emma Miller, who finished eighth in the shot put with a mark of 28'11".
The group of Huber, Meier and the Papin sisters also ran the 4x100, posting a time of 51.06 seconds to take first by .67 seconds and break the meet record, set by Pana in 2017 with a time of 51.38. Hillsboro's time was also just .05 seconds off their school record from last year, which was set by Huber, Meier, Ashlyn Papin and Deanna Jackson.
" The girls had an amazing day even with only five girls competing and limited entries," Coach Son Clayton said of his team.
On To State
Three members of the Hillsboro High School girls track team will be at the Class 2A State Finals after qualifying for Charleston via their performances at Wednesday's sectional in Springfield.
Senior Kyra Huber finished fifth in the 100 meter dash behind two runners from Springfield Southeast and two from Springfield Lanphier, but her time of 12.63 was quick enough to earn her a spot at state.
Kaci Papin and Ashlyn Papin both cleared the qualifying standard of 5'1" to advance to state, with Kaci Papin jumping 5'3", one of three athletes to clear that height at the sectional.
The Class 2A IHSA State Finals start on Friday, May 17, with the preliminary rounds, followed by the finals at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University on Saturday, May 18.
