Lady Toppers Continue Success At Capital Area Classic

In a warm-up for the IHSA Class 2A State Finals, the Hillsboro girls track team made an impressive showing at the Capital Area Classic in Chatham on Monday, May 13.

The Lady Hiltoppers would come away with two first place finishes, two second place finishes, a sixth place finish and a seventh place finish at the meet, which featured some of the Springfield area's best athletes.

Kyra Huber, one of three Hillsboro girls scheduled to compete at state on Friday, May 17, in Charleston, ran a 12.86 to finish second in the 100 meters. Pana's Brianna Sarver would take the top spot with a mark of 12.59 seconds.

Joining Huber at state will be Kaci and Ashlyn Papin, who both competed in the high jump. Kaci Papin would take first with a mark of 5'4", while Ashlyn Papin would finish seventh with a mark of 4'10".

Senior Kylie Meier competed in the triple jump, finishing sixth with a mark of 31'8.5", and also was part of the Toppers' 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, with Huber and the Papins.

The 4x100 team would finish second by .53 seconds to Pittsfield with a time of 51.67, while the 4x200 team would finish first by .02 seconds over Pana, running a 1:51.30.

After the meet, Coach Son Clayton had nothing but praise for Meier, who wrapped up her high school track career at the meet.

"The last four years have been nothing less than exceptional for this outstanding young lady," Clayton said of his co-captain for the last two years. "She has been part of the record-breaking 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, who have broken school records and meet records over the last three years.

Clayton called Meier an exceptional sprinter and triple jumper, with two conference titles under her belt, and said she has played a major part in the success of the Hillsboro girls track team.

"She has also been very successful in the classroom as well. As a coach, I'm very proud of her accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the track," Clayton said of Meier, who plans on studying physical therapy at Maryville University in the fall. "I want to wish her all the best in the next chapter of her life.  I hope she will continue to be as successful off the track as she has been on the track.  I will miss this fine young lady next season."

While Meier has wrapped up her prep career, Huber and the Papins still have more to do. The trio will start their state experience at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 17, with the state prelims, with hopes of advancing to the final round on Saturday, May 11.

Relay Leads Toppers At Classic

Monday's Capital Area Classic gave the Hillsboro boys track team one last opportunity to test themselves against some of the area's best before this Friday's sectional at Lanphier High School in Springfield.

The Toppers sent six individual entries and two relays to the meet, which was held at Glenwood High School in Chatham.

The Toppers would post their best finish in the 4x800, where the team of Joey Lipe, Isaiah Atkins, Ayden Brewer and Josh Bauman ran a time of 8:41.86, good enough for third overall. Only Rushville-Industry (8:25.60) and Rochester (8:26.35) would run faster.

Individually, Ian Roach was sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 35'0" and eighth in the long jump with a mark of 19'3".

Hillsboro also had two entries in the hurdles, with Trevor Toberman going 17.24 to take sixth in the 110 meter hurdles and Cameron Harston going 56.95 to finish seventh in the 300 meter hurdles.

Eli Atkins and Ayden Brewer would be the other two competitors, with Atkins placing tenth in the 800 with a time of 2:15.86 and Brewer finishing tenth in the 1600 with a time of 5:14.36.

Some of the same teams that joined the Toppers in Chatham will be in the sectional on May 17, which starts at 4:30 p.m. with the field events.
