The Hillsboro girls golf team may have finished a spot lower in the standings compared to last year’s South Central Conference Tournament, but the Lady Hiltoppers were much improved at the 2020 event, held Monday, Sept. 28, at Indian Springs Golf Course near Coffeen.
Despite losing Erin Kistner and Felisity Luevano, last year’s number one and number four for HHS at conference, the Lady Hiltoppers cut 27 strokes off their team score, going from a 439 in 2019 to a 412 in 2020.
Not only that, but each of the four returning members of the team shot better than they did the year before.
Meagan Jorn would lead Hillsboro and would cut 15 strokes off her score from last year. Jorn’s 95 on the day also earned her a spot on the all-conference team, which goes to Monday’s top nine finishers.
Anna Colwell would narrowly miss an all-conference nod as well as the Hillsboro senior shot a 101, just three strokes off the final spot, held by Mia McCoy and Rachel Ronat. Colwell improved 12 strokes off her score from last year as well.
Alex Frailey and Gracie Brink would contribute the other two scoring rounds to sew up fourth for Hillsboro, with Frailey improving by 19 strokes over last year’s score.
Sam Frailey would add in a 129 in her first SCC tournament, while Aurelie Granito made a 17 stroke jump over last year, shooting a 133 compared to a 150 in 2019.
Litchfield would win the team crown for the second straight year, with Laura Boston earning medalist honors two years in a row as well. Boston shot an 84, matching her score from last year and beating teammate Carly Guinn by two strokes.
The Lady Hiltoppers will have one more regular season match before regionals as they play Carlinville and Carrollton today, Oct. 1, at the Carlinville Country Club.
Hillsboro’s regional destination is Lakeshore Golf Course in Taylorville, where they will join 14 other teams, including SCC foes Carlinville, Litchfield and Pana, plus Lincolnwood and Ramsey-Nokomis from Montgomery County.
The top two teams and the top four individuals from the regional will advance to the sectional.
