Shutdown defense and a sharpshooting start helped the Lincolnwood boys basketball team to their seventh win of the season on Saturday, Jan. 4, as the Lancers defeated Gillespie 49-35 at the Woodshed in Raymond.
Sophomore Will Jenkins was lights out in the first quarter from behind the arc as the Lancer shooting guard hit four threes to help his team to a 20-11 first quarter lead.
The scoring slowed down in the second quarter, with Lincolnwood managing just six points, but the Lancer defense also stepped up and only allowed two baskets from the Miners. With two quarters down, Lincolnwood led 26-15.
The "D" continued to run the show for the Lancers in the third quarter as the Miners were limited to a basket by Anthony Kravanya and a free throw by Alex Ottersburg.
Defense would turn into offense for the home team as Sam Herman netted six points and Evan Hopper added four to give Lincolnwood a 13-3 advantage in the quarter and a 39-18 lead going into the final frame.
Gillespie would find their range from three in the fourth quarter, getting two treys and eight points total from Brock Fredericks, just under half of Gillespie's 17 total points in the period.
Lincolnwood held off the Miners though, hitting 6-of-10 free throws in the final frame to secure the 14-point victory.
Will Jenkins, who didn't score in the second or third quarter, made 3-of-4 free throws and had two other baskets in the fourth to finish with a game-high 19 points.
Sam Herman, who also went 3-of-4 from the charity stripe in the fourth, finished with 15 points, while Shawn Goebel added seven. Evan Hopper (four), Braxton Schmedeke (two) and Cole Sidwell (two) also scored for the Lancers, who improved to 7-7 on the season with the win.
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Lancers will be back at home as they take on Mt. Pulaski. After that, Lincolnwood makes the short trip to Nokomis to take on the Redskins on Friday, Jan. 10.
