A slow start put the Lincolnwood boys basketball team in an early hole on Monday, Nov. 25, as the Lancers opened up the 2019 season against Macon Meridian at the New Berlin Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Hawks would stake themselves to a 21-10 first quarter lead and never looked back as they defeated the Lancers 76-42 at the Pretzel Dome.
Sophomore Graham Meisenhelter would net nine of his team's 21 points, while senior Jacob Jones chipped in six more to put the Hawks up by 11.
Sam Herman, who had half of Lincolnwood's ten first quarter points, would put in seven more in the second quarter, but Meridian would extend their lead slightly to make it 40-25 at the break. Braxton Schmedeke also helped Lincolnwood in their most successful offensive quarter, hitting two threes to give himself eight points at the half.
The Hawks would step up again in the third quarter though, outscoring Lincolnwood 21-8 behind eight points from Meisenhelter. Will Jenkins would have six of the eight with a pair of threes for the Lancers, while Cole Sidwell had the other two.
Down 61-33 going into the fourth, the Lancers would spread around nine points between four players as they dropped to 0-1 on the young season.
Herman would finish the game with 12 points, all coming in the first half, while Schmedeke added ten. Herman also had three rebounds, two blocks and two steals for the Lancers.
Jenkins would add in eight points, while Sidwell finished with five points and four rebounds. Evan Hopper (three), Devin Brown (two) and Braden Whalen (two) finished out the scoring for Lincolnwood, who was 15-for-42 from the field, 5-of-17 from three-point range and 7-of-17 from the free-throw line.
Graham Meisenhelter would lead all scorers with 19, while Jacob Jones added 17 for the Hawks. North Mac and New Berlin also won their opening games on Monday, with the Panthers defeating South County 51-39 in a directional battle and the host Pretzels pulling away from Springfield Lutheran 57-28.
Lincolnwood, who played the 8 p.m. game on Tuesday, will take on North Mac on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. tilt against Springfield Lutheran on Nov. 29 and a 5:30 p.m. game against South County on Nov. 30 to finish off the tournament.
