After a tough start against a good Jacksonville Routt team on Monday, Nov. 23, the Lincolnwood boys basketball team closed out their run at the Gene Bergschneider Turkey Tournament with some positives to build on for the rest of the season.
In their final two pool play games, the Lancers gave New Berlin a run on their home court before falling 53-32 to the Pretzels, then scored their first win of the season in dominating fashion with a 61-36 victory over Lutheran. That put Lincolnwood in the fifth place game, where they lost a 52-49 nail-biter to Triopia.
On Wednesday, Nov. 24, the Lancers fell to 0-2 with a 53-32 loss to New Berlin, but kept up with the tournament hosts for most of the game.
Freshman Jonah Elvidge had five points in the opening quarter and helped Lincolnwood keep the deficit to just two points as New Berlin led 12-10 after the first eight minutes.
The Pretzel sophomore combo of Gannon Dodd and Lucas Bixby helped extend their team’s lead, scoring 14 of New Berlin’s 15 points in the quarter as Lincolnwood trailed 27-17 at halftime.
After being held to two points in the first half, Will Jenkins hit a pair of threes in the third quarter, but New Berlin countered with Kevin Howell, who knocked down four threes and gave New Berlin a 41-25. The Pretzels would close out the game by making four of five free throws in the fourth quarter, with Bixby adding another six points for a game-high 16 in the win.
Will Jenkins, who hit another three in the fourth, led Lincolnwood with 12 points, while Braden Whalen and Jonah Elvidge added seven apiece. Brady Schmedeke was the only other Lancer to score, netting six points in the loss.
The Lancers would rebound in fine fashion in their pool play finale, scoring a 61-36 victory over Springfield Lutheran on Nov. 26.
As good as things would get, they didn’t start great for the Lancers as Lutheran took a 14-7 lead after one. Then the Lancers caught fire from three-point range, hitting five threes to take a 25-20 advantage by halftime. Will Jenkins hit three threes and three free throws to lead the scoring, while Jared Klein and Braden Whalen also added in treys.
Jenkins remained hot in the third with two more threes and 13 total points to up his total to 25 for the game. Whalen also contributed seven points in the quarter, giving him 14 for the game.
Up 45-32 going into the fourth quarter, Whalen helped salt the game away with seven more points, upping his total to 21 for the game. Jonah Elvidge added in five points in the 25-point win, while Jared Klein (3), Karson Hayes (3), Brady Schmedeke (2) and Kennady Cook (2) also scored for the Lancers.
Fifth Place Game
In the fifth place game against Triopia on Nov. 27, Lincolnwood outscored the Trojans in two of the four quarters and matched them point for point in a third. The difference maker was the third quarter, when Triopia heated up from three, hitting six of their seven triples to outscore the Lancers 20-14 in the quarter and account for their three-point win.
After Will Jenkins and Braden Whalen combined for 46 points in the win over Lutheran, the Lancers’ top returnees from last year had another big game. Whalen scored eight of Lincolnwood’s 11 points in the first quarter as the score stood tied after eight minutes.
Jenkins got into the act in the second frame, hitting a three and scoring five points, while Whalen added six more points, going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Lincolnwood’s defense also stepped up, holding the Trojans to nine points to take a 22-20 advantage.
The trend continued in the second half as Jenkins scored seven and Whalen added four, with freshman Jonah Elvidge knocking down a three to give Lincolnwood their most productive quarter with 14 points. Unfortunately, the Troans unloaded from three-point land, with four different players combining for six threes, with Cordell Walker and Jake Mueller hitting two apiece.
Down 40-36 going into the final quarter, Lincolnwood tried to erase the deficit, getting seven from Jenkins, four from Whalen and two from Brady Schmedeke. The Trojans were able to maintain their lead, though, hitting 6-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter, with Aiden Neathery hitting five straight at one point.
Jenkins would finish with 19 for the game and earned a spot on the all-tournament team, while Whalen added in 22. Jonah Elvidge (6) and Brady Schmedeke (2) rounded out the scoring for the Lancers, who are 1-3 on the early season.
The Lancers will be off until Friday, Dec. 3, with their next game an MSM Conference tilt against Mt. Olive. The game will be varsity only and will start at 6 p.m.
