Lancers Hold Off Tigers In Regional Precursor

A strong defensive showing in the second quarter helped the Lincolnwood boys basketball team score a 46-41 win over Greenfield-Northwestern on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in what may be a regional prequel for the Lancers.

Both Lincolnwood and Greenfield-Northwestern are the better seeds in their opening regional games on Tuesday, Feb. 25, which, like Tuesday’s game, will be played in Raymond. A win from both would set up round two between the Lancers and Tigers on Wednesday, Feb. 26, with a berth in the regional championship at stake.

Round one would be close early, with Lincolnwood taking a 14-13 lead after eight minutes. Evan Hopper would score six points for the Lancers in the opening frame, while Shawn Goebel and Sam Herman added four apiece.

Goebel and Herman would add to their totals in the second quarter, combining to score all 13 Lincolnwood points, but it was the Lancer defense that led the way. A pair of field goals by Brady Pembrook and Clayton Woods would be all Greenfield-Northwestern would score in the second quarter as Lincolnwood’s one-point advantage grew to ten points by halftime.

The final two quarters would be more like the first, with the Tigers shaving three points off the margin in the third quarter, only to give two of those points back in the fourth quarter.

Shawn Goebel would score six of his team’s ten points in the final eight minutes as the Lancers held on for a five point win, despite a 4-for-12 performance in the fourth quarter from the charity stripe.

Goebel would lead all scorers with 20 points for his second consecutive 20-point game and his fifth overall this season. Sam Herman would add in 16 points, while Evan Hopper added six. Jhadyn Walker and Cole Sidwell rounded out the scoring with two points apiece.

Brady Pembrook led Greenfield-Northwestern with 13 points, while Clayton Woods and Doug McWorter added nine points apiece for the Tigers, who fell to 14-11.

With the win, Lincolnwood improved to 18-11 as the 20-win mark is within their grasp for the first time since 2016. In order to reach that mark, the Lancers will have to beat Edinburg on Thursday, Feb. 20, at home on senior night, and Mt. Olive at the regional on Feb. 25. The second win would set up a rematch with the Tigers for a shot at Lincolnwood’s first regional championship appearance since 2013.
