Be it nerves or adrenaline from the large crowd gathered for senior night, or the fact that Edinburg is just better than they were a month ago, Thursday’s game between Lincolnwood and the visiting Wildcats was much closer than their last meeting on Jan. 13, which the Lancers won 48-16.
Edinburg surpassed their point total from the first game with three minutes left in the second quarter and trailed just 23-22 going into halftime. A staunch defensive effort and the depth of the Lancers, who were able to wear down the nine-man roster of the Wildcats, prevailed in the second half though, as Lincolnwood picked up their 19th win by the comfortable margin of 49-30.
The Wildcats jumped out in front and led by as many as four on two separate occasions in the first quarter, before Lincolnwood rattled off six straight to take the lead from two Jhadyn Walker baskets and a pair of free throws by Sam Herman. Mitchell Bloome would net the last basket of the quarter though, allowing Edinburg to tie the game at 10-10 after eight minutes.
Lincolnwood would outscore the Wildcats 8-4 in the first half of the second quarter, getting four points from Evan Hopper and two each from Sam Herman and Braden Whalen. The lead would eventually grow to five, 23-18, after a three by Braxton Schmedeke and a two from Devin Brown, but Edinburg would score the final four points of the quarter, with Bloome beating the buzzer to make it a one point game at halftime.
After letting the Wildcats hang around in the first half, the Lincolnwood defense slammed the door on them in the final two quarters. It would take Edinburg more than seven minutes to score their first and only basket of the third quarter, a layup by Colin Hardin, with 42 seconds left in the quarter.
While Lincolnwood didn’t set the nets aflame in the third, they did bookend Hardin’s basket with four points from Herman and Hopper on one side and four more from Shawn Goebel on the other. Goebel, Lincolnwood’s leading scorer this season, was held scoreless in the first half, but got a layup with eight seconds left in the third, then a steal and another basket on the inbounds to increase the Lincolnwood lead to seven, 31-24.
The Lancers would begin to pull away in the fourth quarter, with Goebel scoring after another steal, followed by baskets by Jhadyn Walker and Sam Herman to make it 37-24. After trading baskets, Will Lefever would cut the Lincolnwood lead to ten, 39-29, but the Lancers would outscore Edinburg 10-1 over the final four minutes of the game, with senior Dalton Thomas putting a bow on the victory with a jumper for the final points of the game.
Lincolnwood’s five seniors, which includes Tucker Lemon who was unable to play due to injury, accounted for 29 of the Lancers’ 49 points on Feb. 20. Sam Herman led the group with ten, while Shawn Goebel added nine and Evan Hopper finished with eight. Dalton Thomas would round out the senior scoring with two. The group is a good representation of the co-op program between Lincolnwood and Morrisonville, with Herman, Hopper and Lemon representing the Lancers and Goebel and Thomas coming from Mohawk Territory, with all five contributing in some facet of the game.
Another Mohawk-turned-Lancer, Jhadyn Walker, would net a team-high 11 points in the win, followed by Braxton Schmedeke with five, Braden Whalen with two and Devin Brown with two.
The win gave the Lancers a 19-11 regular season mark and a perfect 10-0 record on their home court in Raymond. They hope to continue that home court advantage in the postseason, where they will host the regional. Lincolnwood’s first game is on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. against Mt. Olive, with the winner moving on to the semifinal against either Greenfield-Northwestern or Bunker Hill on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
