For the 15th time in the volleyball program’s history, the Lincolnwood Lancers are regional champions. The latest championship came at the expense of the neighbors, the Morrisonville Mohawks, who the Lancers defeated in two games on Thursday, Oct. 31, in Mt. Olive.
Lincolnwood would jump out to an insurmountable lead in the first game and never looked back as they defeated Morrisonville 25-7.
The title was far from locked up though as the Mohawks came charging back and held a 21-19 lead late in game two.
Lincolnwood would break the Mohawks’ serve with a kill by Cassie Krager, then tied the game on another Krager kill, this time by Madison Krager. The Lancers would take a brief 22-21 lead before a block by Ali Harris gave Morrisonville their 22nd point.
The Mohawks took a 23-22 lead off a Paige Sheedy serve and a four-hit call, but Cassie Krager stopped the rally with another kill. The two teams would trade points on a Mohawk error and a Lincolnwood hit out of bounds, before Krager struck again to make it 25-24 and put herself on the serving line.
Morrisonville had a chance to tie the game once again, but a tip by Harris floated just out of bounds as Lincolnwood celebrated the 26-24 win.
The Kragers would combine for 17 kills, with Cassie putting down ten and Madison adding seven. Katelyn Payne also had five kills, while Avery Pope and Sidney Glick contributed both kills (two and one) and assists (18 and three).
Cassie Krager also led the serving with ten points and five aces. Maggie McClelland added eight points, with Lexie Millburg and Avery Pope chipping in five each, including an ace for Pope. Glick (two) and Jasmine Vickery (one) also had points.
Pope, Glick and Millburg all had double digit dig totals, with 14, 12 and 12 respectively, while McClelland and Cassie Krager added nine apiece as well. Kyra Shull and Katelyn Payne also had a dig apiece, with Payne contributing the team's lone block.
The victory was Lincolnwood’s 28th of the season, the sixth most in the program’s history. The school record for wins came in the 1996 season, when the Lancers went 35-2 and won the team’s fourth, and most recent, sectional title.
The Lancers hope to end that sectional drought on their home court this week as they host the winners of the Carrollton, Valmeyer and Marissa regionals. New Athens and Greenfield-Northwestern play the sectional’s first game at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4, followed by Lincolnwood squaring off with Waterloo Gibaut at 6:30 p.m. The sectional final is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m. at the Woodshed in Raymond, with the winner advancing to the New Berlin Super-Sectional on Friday, Nov. 8, against the Athens Sectional champion.
