Lancers Score First Win At New Berlin Tourney

A strong second quarter boosted the Lincolnwood Lancers to their first win of the season on Friday, Nov. 29, with a 47-33 decision over Springfield Lutheran High School at the Gene Bergschneider Turkey Tourney in New Berlin.

After dropping their first three games at the Pretzel Dome, the Lancers were steady in the first quarter against the Crusaders, with Sam Herman and Shawn Goebel accounting for eight of Lincolnwood's 13 points.

With a two point lead after the opening eight minutes, the Lancers came on strong in the second quarter, with six players scoring to build up an 28-15 lead. Braxton Schmedeke, Will Jenkins and Cole Sidwell all hit from three-point range as Lincolnwood carried a 13-point lead into halftime.

Neither team would score much in the third quarter, with both picking up six points to keep the Lancer lead at 13.

The first four minutes of the fourth quarter would be a different story as Lutheran made a move to cut the lead to nine. But as quickly as the comeback started, it disappeared. The Crusaders were whistled for two technical fouls, which played a part in a 10-0 run for the Lancers

Evan Hopper scored eight of those points, hitting a pair of free throws after the first technical, then a layup on the ensuing possession off an assist by Sidwell.

The Lincolnwood senior would be fouled on the rebound on the other end of the court, with Lutheran picking up their second technical shortly after. Hopper knocked down four straight free throws to make it 44-27, then hit Herman streaking to the basket on the inbounds at half-court for the Lancers' largest lead of the game at 19 points.

Lutheran would score six of the last seven points before a free throw by Braden Whalen resulted in the final 47-33 score.

Hopper's fourth quarter surge would give him 14 for the game, the most for either team. Shawn Goebel added 11, while Sam Herman finished with ten before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Will Jenkins (five), Cole Sidwell (three), Braxton Schmedeke (three) and Whalen (one) finished out the scoring for Lincolnwood.

New Berlin

The Lancers would take on the host school on Tuesday, Nov. 27, and fell to the Pretzels 54-24.

New Berlin led 15-7 after one, but maded up the most of their lead in the second quarter, when they outscored the Lancers 21-4. A three by Cole Sidwell would be the only field goal of the quarter for Lincolnwood.

The Pretzels continued their defensive dominance in the second half as they held the Lancers to just one field goal once again and extended their lead to 47-13. Lincolnwood would outscore the hosts 11-7 in the final frame, but the damage was already done by that point.

Evan Hopper led the Lancers with seven points, followed by Braxton Schmedeke with six, Colton Tischkau with five and Shawn Goebel and Cole Sidwell with three each.

North Mac

With the exception of one bad quarter, Lincolnwood played well in their 49-40 loss to North Mac on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

The Lancers led 15-9 after the first quarter, with Devin Brown getting six points in his first varsity start. The wheels would fall off in the second quarter for Lincolnwood as they managed just one field goal and six free throws as they trailed the Panthers 31-23 at halftime.

The second half would be much better for Lincolnwood as they matched North Mac 8-8 in the third quarter and gave up just one more point in the fourth to finish off the loss.

Cole Sidwell would lead the Lancers in scoring with 11 points, followed by Devin Brown with eight, Shawn Goebel with seven and Braxton Schemedeke with five. Braden Whalen chipped in four, with Evan Hopper and Sam Herman adding two and Will Jenkins hitting a free throw for one.

South County

In their final game of the tournament, the Lancers nearly came back from a 13-point third quarter deficit before falling to South County 41-37.

Lincolnwood held a 13-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Vipers whittled away at that margin and only trailed by one going into the break, 15-14.

The third quarter would be even worse for the Lancers as they were outscored 17-3 in the period, resulting in a 31-18 lead for South County.

Lincolnwood refused to give up though, chopping the lead in half by the midway point of the quarter, and eventually taking the lead on a layup by Shawn Goebel.

Turnovers would keep the Lancers from the win though as two South County steals led to three free throws, which gave the Vipers the lead. After a charge call on Lincolnwood, South County was fouled again and hit both charity chances to account for the final margin of 41-37.

Shawn Goebel led the team with 13 points and was named to this year's all-tournament team. Sam Herman chipped in nine for the Lancers, followed by Cole Sidwell with six, Evan Hopper with five and Will Jenkins with four.

The Lancers will be back on the road for their next two games as they take on Mt. Olive on Friday, Dec. 6, followed by a trip to Hillsboro on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
