Larry D. Schoen, 72, of New Berlin, died Friday, June 7, 2019, at 2:25 a.m. at Memorial Hospice at Heritage Health in Springfield.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Butler Funeral Home in New Berlin.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 13, at the funeral home with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors. Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

Mr. Schoen was born Feb. 20, 1947, in Litchfield, the son of Harold G. and Arvada Phillips Schoen. He married Madonna Joy Smith on Aug. 26, 1972, in Hillsboro, and she survives.

A 1965 graduate of Hillsboro High School, he proudly served in the United States Army in the 3rd Squadron, 5th Cavalry and 9th Infantry Division. During his time in the Army, he earned a CIB Medal, Vietnam Bronze Star and two Army Commendation medals.

He worked as a truck driver for over 30 years, retiring in 2005. He spent 28 years with Nussbaum Trucking.

After retiring, he also drove for Sacred Heart Convent. He was an active member of the New Berlin community, serving as a volunteer firefighter for nine years, as well as the little league president. He  formed the New Berlin YMCA Soccer League, where he was also the president. 

For ten years he was the president of the New Berlin Sports Boosters, and during that time he founded the Pretzel Open.

He spent his winter months in Florida. He enjoyed golf, fishing and traveling. He was an avid New Berlin Pretzel fan, and St. Louis Cardinals fan, as well as a University of Illinois football fan.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jason Schoen (companion Cynthia Rada) of Springfield and Mitchell (wife Aimee) Schoen of Auburn; three grandchildren, Jaxon, Madden and Mailee Schoen; and numerous cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Nelson Schoen.
