Late Inning Heroics Lift Redskins

For the second straight year, the Nokomis Redskins are regional champions, as they defeated Toledo Cumberland on Saturday, May 18, by a score of 3-0.

Brennyn Cutts took the mound for the Pirates to start the game, and quickly struck out the first two Redskin batters on six pitches. Ryan Janssen jumped on Cutts’ first pitch and tripled, but the Skins were unable to bring him in, ending the scoring threat in the first.

Carter Sabol started for Nokomis and had a good start to his day as well, signaling that the crowd might be in for a pitcher’s duel.

Both pitchers continued to sit down the opposing batters until the bottom of the fourth, when Sabol ran into some trouble. The Pirates had the bases loaded with two outs, when the runner on third base attempted to steal home.

Sabol quickened his delivery and got it to the plate in time, where Janssen put the tag on the runner and ended the threat. The Skins were unable to really grab momentum by the play, though, and continued to be shutout through the next two innings.

After six, the score remained knotted at zero, with both Cutts' and Sabol’s pitch counts getting close to triple digits. Nokomis got a leadoff walk from Benny Clavin, who was then moved over by Adam Lyons on a sacrifice bunt.

Evan Herpstreith was hit by a pitch, and suddenly the Redskins had two men on and only one out for the heart of their order. Landon Engelman, pinch running for Clavin, scored from second base on a slow roller hit by Janssen that was misplayed by the Pirate shortstop.

With the 1-0 lead, the Skins looked to add more. Sabol walked, loading the bases for Nick Mascher. Mascher squared one up into right field, plating two runs and giving Nokomis a 3-0 lead in the seventh.

Sabol walked back to the mound to try and complete the shutout, and he did exactly that. He ended with eight strikeouts and allowed only two hits in the complete game shutout. Cutts struck out ten for the Pirates, allowing only four hits. Janssen was the only Redskin with two hits in the contest.

The win advances Nokomis to the Dieterich Sectional, where they will play Louisville North Clay on Wednesday, May 22.

Nokomis vs. SEB

The Redskins’ postseason journey started with a hosting of the St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles on Thursday, May 16. The Skins used a good first inning to ultimately win 4-1, sending them to the regional championship.

After Nokomis starter Drew Masset sat down the Eagles in order in the top of the first, the Redskins managed to put up four runs on only one hit in the bottom half to give them an early advantage.

Masset allowed a run in the second, making the score 4-1 after two, but neither team was able to plate a run for the remainder of the game, which ultimately ended in a 4-1 final score.

Nokomis was outhit in the contest 4-2. Masset threw five and one-third innings, striking out 12 batters and only allowing the one run. The win moved the Skins to 17-4, only one win away from a sectional berth and their eighth regional championship in 11 years.

Nokomis Closes Out Season With Wins

The Nokomis Redskins picked up their sixth consecutive win  on Monday, May 6, beating Father McGivney 7-1 in their second to last regular season game before regionals.

The Skins threw the first punch, scoring three runs in the second inning and one more in the fourth. McGivney would answer with a run in the fourth inning off Nokomis starter Carter Sabol, but the Skins got the run right back in the bottom half, putting the score at 5-1.

The Skins picked up two insurance runs in the sixth inning, and Evan Herpstreith got the final six outs, ending the game with a score of 7-1 in favor of Nokomis.

Sabol pitched well for the Skins, throwing five innings, striking out nine and not allowing a hit. Benny Clavin had three hits for Nokomis, with Marc Grigoroff, Ryan Janssen and Drew Masset all adding two.

Nokomis vs. New Berlin

Nokomis extended their win streak to seven on Tuesday, May 7, as they took down the New Berlin Pretzels 6-5.

The game didn’t see any scoring through the first two innings, but New Berlin would jump out on top in the third inning, scoring three runs. The Pretzel offense continued to roll, putting up two more runs in the fourth, extending their lead to 5-0.

But the Redskins answered, putting up four runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth and cutting the lead to one. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, a key New Berlin error gave the Redskins two runs, catapulting them into the lead and only three outs away from a victory.

The Skins shut the door in the seventh and moved their record to 16-4 with the 6-5 win.

Alex Tosetti, Benny Clavin, and Carter Sabol had two hits for the Redskins, while Nick Mascher threw three shutout innings allowing only two hits.

In addition to their sectional game against Louisville North Clay on Wednesday, May 22, at 6:30 p.m., the Redskins are also scheduled to make up a Prairie State Conference game on Thursday, May 23, at home against Bunker Hill.
