Loaded with seniors who have played varsity for three or more years now, the Lincolnwood High School volleyball team opened their 2021 season with a win over Mt. Olive on Friday, March 19.
The six seniors on this year’s squad, Lexie Millburg, Cassie Krager, Jayden Kuchar, Maggie McClelland, Emme Weller and Katelyn Payne, played a big role in the win, which came in two games by the scores of 25-10 and 25-18.
Lexie Millburg served up four straight points in game one after the Lancers broke Mt. Olive’s serve in the opening game, including two of her four aces against the Wildcats. Moments later, Maggie McClelland would go on a run, serving up seven straight points to turn an 8-2 contest into a 15-2 Lincolnwood lead. The Wildcats never got any closer than 12 points to the Lancers the rest of the way out as Millburg finished off the win with her third ace of the game.
Lincolnwood scored first in game two and led 7-1 in the early going thanks to a potent jump serve by Sydney Glick. Mt. Olive would pull within three at one point, 17-14, but Lincolnwood got the next three points to extend their lead and push through for a seven-point win.
Maggie McClelland led the team with nine points and tied Lexie Millburg in aces with four each. Millburg and Sydney Glick both had eight points, while Avery Pope added five and Emme Weller chipped in three.
On the attack, Pope served up 15 assists, with Cassie Krager and Katelyn Payne the biggest recipients with five kills each, including Payne’s game-winner in the second set. McClelland (three), Pope (three) and Desi Pitchford (two) also had kills, while Glick added in two assists.
Defensively, Glick led the team with six digs and a block, while Millburg had five digs. Pope also picked up three digs, while Krager, Payne and McClelland had two digs, with McClelland also adding a block.
Only two players, seniors Maddie Krager and Kyra Shull, are gone from last year's team that went 28-8-1 with a trip to the sectionals. While the postseason is cancelled for 2021, the potential for a successful year for the Lady Lancers is higher than ever.
Lincolnwood will look to move to 2-0 on the season at home on Tuesday, March 23, but MSM Conference rival Springfield Lutheran stands in their way.
