The Lincolnwood High School soccer team started their season off in winning fashion on Monday, Aug. 26, with a 7-0 victory over Taylorville.
The Lancers were scheduled to be at home, but instead headed to the turf of the Tornadoes home field. Despite the road trip, Lincolnwood made themselves at home anyway, scoring five times in the first half to take a commanding lead. After the break, the Lancers would tack on two more to finish off win number one on the season.
Senior Evan Hopper would have a big game for the Lancers in his 2019 debut, scoring three times and assisting on two other goals in the win. Luke Webb would have two goals for Lincolnwood, while Cassie Bradbury added another goal and took the shot that turned into an own goal by the Tornadoes.
Austin Gwinn would get the shutout in goal in the Lancers' debut.
Game two wouldn't be as productive for the Lancers as they took an early lead before falling to Gillespie, who co-ops with Litchfield, by a 3-2 final score.
Evan Hopper would pick up his fourth goal of the season just seconds into the contest as he put the Lancers up 1-0 less than a minute in.
The Miners' Jeremie Yakana would help boost Gillespie into the lead midway through the first half, though, scoring twice to make it 2-1 in the home team's favor at the break.
It would stay that way until Benny Clavin got the equalizer for the Lancers in the second half. Clavin took a penalty for Lincolnwood, then followed his shot after it was saved and scored on the rebound.
The jubilation of the tie wouldn't last long though as Gillespie's Nate Fetter scored just after the restart as the Miners held on for the win.
Lincolnwood, who plays Lanphier at Lee Field in Springfield on Thursday, Aug. 29, will have a shot at revenge against the Miners on Saturday, Aug. 31, in the 9 a.m. game of the Carlinville Kickoff Classic.
The Lancers also play Staunton in the Carlinville tournament on Friday, Aug. 30, at 4:15 p.m. and Jerseyville at Loveless Park at noon on Saturday.
