Lincolnwood Third At Waverly

Posted

The Lincolnwood High School volleyball team was looking for a good test going into the final few games of the season and even before any games were played, they were pretty sure they would find it at the Waverly Tournament. The Lancers’ four pool play opponents were 71-33 combined going into the tournament, meaning that Lincolnwood needed to play some of their best volleyball of the season to come away with any kind of success.

As it turned out, the Lancers more than held their own against the “Pool of Death” as they went 2-1-1, with wins over North Mac and Calhoun, a tie against Greenfield-Northwestern and a loss to eventual tournament champion Southeastern. Actually, all five teams in Pool B won their final matches, with Calhoun placing ninth, North Mac finishing seventh, Greenfield-Northwestern taking fifth and the Lancers placing third.

The tournament started on Oct. 15, with the Lancers splitting their two games with a win over North Mac 25-19, 25-20 and a pair of 25-16 losses to Southeastern. Day two would bring another win for the Lancers, who dispatched Calhoun 25-14, 25-16 after splitting with Greenfield-Northwestern 25-20, 12-25.

The pool play record put the Lancers in the third place game against the tournament’s hosts, the Waverly-Franklin co-op, the South County Vipers. Lincolnwood proved to be the anti-venom for the Vipers once again as they beat South County for the second time this season, 25-13, 25-19.

In five games, Lincolnwood put down 115 kills, reaching the 20-kill mark in four of the five games, with 109 assists. Hailee Belsher led the team with 42 kills in five games. She and teammate Jazmin Seaton-Hobson, who earned all-tournament honors, were tied with 28 kills apiece going into the final game, when Belsher exploded for 14 kills and Seaton Hobson added in five. Tessa Funderburk led the team in assists with 51, while Avery Pope added 48 as she went over the 1,000 assist mark for her career.

Lincolnwood served up 30-plus points twice, with 112 points and 18 aces at Waverly. Both Sidney Glick and Avery Pope had 27 points at the tournament, with Pope also leading the team in aces with seven.

Defensively, Lincolnwood had 287 digs, including 80 against Greenfield-Northwestern, and eight blocks. Jasmine Vickery led Lincolnwood with 61 digs, including 21 against Greenfield-Northwestern, while Hailee Belsher and Sidney Glick added in 43 and 40 digs respectively.

The Lancers will close out the regular season on Monday, Oct. 18, at home against Pawnee. It will be senior night for Lincolnwood, with Desi Pitchford and Sidney Glick to be honored prior to the varsity game.
