Litchfield First At Southwestern

The pursuit of perfection continues for the Litchfield High School cross country team, but on Saturday, Oct. 2, the Panthers were pretty close.

Eleven of the 14 runners who competed in the Southwestern Invitational for Litchfield medaled by finishing in the top three of their group, including all eight male runners. That yielded big results in the team standings for the Panthers, who finished first on the boys’ side and third in the girls’ ranks.

Points were awarded in the event by how the runner did against other competitors in the same position for their teams (number one runners against other number ones, number twos against other number twos, and so on).

Camden Quarton continued to show that he is one of the best runners in the area as he completed the 5k course in 16 minutes and 17 seconds, a new course record by 14 seconds. The win in the number one group and overall was the second of the season for Quarton, who also won the Highland Invitational.

Litchfield would also collect three other firsts, three seconds and a third at Southwestern. Gavin Thimsen was first amongst the number four runners with a time of 18:38, while Alex DeLaCruz was first in the number five runner group with a time of 20:20. Brayden Davis added the third win, topping the number seven runner group with a 19:55.

Kevin Pollard and Sam Horn were both second in their groups, with Pollard running an 18-flat in the number two group and Horn running an 18:11 in the number three group. Kenny Traylor also had a runner-up finish in the number six group with a 19:56, while Peyton Baugher was third in the number eight group with a time of 23:21.

The Litchfield girls finished third in the meet, but had the same number of points as Jerseyville, who took second based on the sixth runner tie-breaker.

Myka Fenton was second among number one runners with a time of 20:40 and third overall behind a pair of Mt. Zion runners, Brooke Doyle (20:36) and Ellie Fritzsche (20:23). The Braves brought four runners, one short of enough for a team score.

Fenton was one of three medalists for the LHS girls, with Delanie Ulrich and Harley Traylor also earning that distinction. Ulrich won the number three runners group with a time of 21:40, while Traylor was third amongst number four runners with a time of 24:31.

Of the other Litchfield girls, Kylee Eiting finished fourth in the number two group with a 22:18, Joelle Hughes was fifth in the number five group with a time of 29:27 and Emma Hughes was fourth in the number six group with a time of 34:31.

The Panthers’ next pursuit of perfection will be at Loveless Park in Carlinville on Tuesday, Oct. 5, for the Carlinville Invitational.
