Four members of the South Central Conference took the opportunity to test out Indian Springs Golf Course near Coffeen on Monday, Sept. 21, in a prequel to next Tuesday’s conference tournament.
Among those in attendance were the Litchfield Panthers, who shot a 178 to beat Greenville by 17 strokes and Pana by 20 strokes, with Southwestern also playing, but one player short of a full team.
Freshmen Tug Schwab and Ian Otto continued their excellent debut seasons with a pair of 5-over-par 40s on the day. Those rounds put the two ninth graders in a tie for the top spot individually with Greenville’s Christian Bauer.
Zach Boston, A.J. Odle and Cam Frerichs also broke 50 for the Panthers as each finished with 49s on the front nine of the course. Ryan Baugher rounded out the Litchfield line-up, shooting a 58 for the day.
The match was a good test for the young Panthers, who haven’t won a conference tournament since 2009. To break that streak, they’ll have to go up against some talented teams from Vandalia, Hillsboro and Carlinville, but even if this year isn’t the year for Litchfield, the future is bright for the Purple Panthers.
