It was a bit of a wet start to the season for the Litchfield cross country team, but a good one nonetheless as the Panthers got their first meet under their belts on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Running against Roxana, Staunton, Hillsboro, Pana and Carlinville at the Cavies’ early meet at Loveless Park, Litchfield placed third in the girls race and second in the boys race for a solid start to the season.

The LHS girls finished with 78 points, just two behind Staunton for second place. Roxana, who has become a cross country powerhouse in the region, took first with 20 points, boosted by having the top four individual finishers.

Sophomore Myka Fenton led the Litchfield girls with a time of 23:00.92, good enough for 11th place overall. Delanie Ulrich and Isabelle Murphy would also finish in the top 20 as Ulrich ran a 23:38.05 to finish 13th, while Murphy ran a 24:47.08 to finish 20th.

Kylee Eiting would be close behind her teammate with a 21st place finish and a time of 25:04.55, while Karly Kruse and Olivia Mitchell finished out the LHS roster with times of 25:33.86, good for 23rd, and 27:19.39, good for 30th.

In the boys race, senior Will Carlile was near the front of the field from the start and went on to finish fourth overall in the race. Carlile stopped the clock at 18:09.58, coming in behind Carlos Ruvalcaba of Roxana and the Carlinville duo of Will Meyer and Brody Harris.

In his first varsity race, freshman Camden Quarton gave Litchfield a solid second runner as he finished in a time of 18:29.27 to place sixth. Sophomore Gavin Thimsen and junior Kevin Pollard would also finish in the top ten, eighth and tenth respectively, with times of 19:01.74 and 19:37.99.

Just behind the top ten were Litchfield’s Brayden Davis, who was 13th with a time of 19:49.45, Alex DeLaCruz, who was 15th with a time of 20:09.58 and Eithan Rigsbey, who was 18th with a time of 20:36.08.

In addition to the varsity runners, Sam Horn and Brandon Malloy also finished in the top ten in the separate JV boys race. Horn took third with a time of 20:24.21, while Malloy was seventh with a time of 21:42.58.

Litchfield’s next match will be on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Staunton High School as they compete against Greenville, Roxana and Carlinville.
