With the help of many local farmers, it took nearly four hours for area fire departments to extinguish a field fire on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 14, in Harvel. Seventeen members of the Raymond-Harvel Fire Department were called to the scene at 2:36 p.m. and requested assistance from the Farmersville-Waggoner and Morrisonville-Palmer fire departments.
The fire ignited near the intersection of 24th Avenue and Black Diamond Trail, and burned roughly a little over three miles of the field. Fortunately, there were no standing crops at the time of the fire. The scene was cleared at 6:05 p.m.
“Thank you to all the farmers who brought tractors and tillage equipment to help put the fire out,” said Raymond-Harvel Fire Chief Danny McCallum.
The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for parts of central Illinois for Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. as a result of low humidity and strong winds.
