Lyle G. Hanauer, 95, of Hillsboro, died on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019, at 4:19 a.m. at Hillsboro Area Hospital.

A graveside service with military rites will be held Dec. 20, beginning at 11 a.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield with the Rev. Michael Lawton, pastor of United Methodist Church in Hillsboro, officiating. Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home in Hillsboro is assisting the family.

Mr. Hanauer was born July 16, 1924, in Springfield, to Edward and Laura Hanauer. He married Frances Porter, and she survives.

He graduated from Lanphier High School in Springfield with the class of 1942. He joined the U.S. Army in March 1943 during WWII, where he was a medic in Africa and Italy. He received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Italy during his service time.

During his civilian career, Mr. Hanauer worked for Allis Chalmers and Fiat Allis for over 30 years. 

He served on many boards and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Springfield and Hillsboro. He volunteered at The Senior Center in Taylor Springs and enjoyed following sports and camping at the Rainmaker Campground in Litchfield.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hanauer is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Chris) Murtaugh; one stepdaughter, Sandy (Tim) Hand; three grandchildren, Jason Murtaugh, Colin (Ashley) Murtaugh and Alison M. (Sean) LaFortune; three stepgrandchildren, Matthew (Kristen) Porter, Michelle (Gene) McConnell and Zac (Tracy) Hand; and ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings; and wives, Laveta (Pinkston) Hanauer and Doris (Purvis) Hanauer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.
