Michael Hudson Mugge, 49, of Murphysboro, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020, in Nashville, TN. 

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, March 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.. at the Murphysboro Elks Lodge. 

A graveside service with military honors by the U.S. Army will be held Saturday, March 7, at 11 a.m. in Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Harrisburg. Crawshaw Funeral Home in  Murphysboro is assisting the family.

Mr. Mugge was born Dec. 25, 1970, in Carbondale, a son to Dr. Michael J. and Diane (Down) Mugge.

A graduate of Murphysboro High School and Advanced ROTC from Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL, he went on to serve in the United States Army. He attained the rank of captain and served with the Army Rangers in the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) from Fort Campbell, KY.

He was also a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He was reactivated from the reserves following the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 and served in the Middle East in 2002.

During his military career, he completed the Total Army Instructor Training Course: Platform Officer Candidate Instructor, School of Cadet Command Graduate Combined Arms Services and Staff School Graduate, U.S. Army Armor Officer Advanced Course Graduate, U.S. Army Ranger School, U.S. Army Air Assault School, U.S. Army Airborne School, as well as an Eagle Scout.

After the service to his country, he was employed in the elevator industry as a construction supervisor in new commercial construction.  He dearly loved his family, many friends, his country and was a very helpful and giving person.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by sister and brother-in-law, Dana and Scott Herndon of Woodstock, GA; nephew, Brock Herndon;  and niece, Abbigail Herndon.

He was preceded in death by his father on Dec. 6, 2019.
