Mrs. Evans was born Jan. 14, 1930, in Walshville, to John N. and Mable Wall. She married Elston Evans on Feb. 25, 1950, and he preceded her in death in 2016.

As a child, her family lived in Walshville and they moved to Sorento when she entered high school. After graduating from high school, she moved to Edwardsville, where she worked and met her future husband, Elston.

She was a secretary for Madison County Home Bureau and the Illinois Veterans Commission, both in Edwardsville, and spent her last 20 years at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE). She took great pride in her career at the university, and loved the energy of the campus and the young people who attended school there.

Her warm smile, kind, gentle and helpful manner was special to all who knew her. She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and loved to tell stories about them.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Edwardsville, where she played piano for many years. Later, she and her husband joined Esic Baptist Church in Edwardsville. In 2010, they moved to Springfield to be closer to their oldest daughter, Valera.

She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan, and shared this love with her father, her son, and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved playing Skipbo with her children and grandchildren, playing pinochle with her husband and friends, doing crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble, and always getting the high score.

She is survived by three daughters, Valera Yazell of Springfield, Sheila Evans of Sacramento, CA, and Marcia Evans of Olympia, WA; six grandchildren, Tabatha Yazell of San Francisco, CA,  Brent Yazell and Kristen (Bryan) Clow, all of Springfield, Jessica (Mike) Rogers and Ben (Rhianedd) Hidalgo, all of Sacramento, CA, and Lauren Evans of Austin, TX; eight great-grandchildren, Dylan, Stella and Harper Clow, Isaac and Eleanor Rogers, Elowyn Hidalgo, Hazel Cook, and Samira Martinez; sister, Nadine (Nelson) Kunz of Round Lake; five nieces; and sister-in-law, Gwen Eberhart of Edwardsville.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her beloved son, John.
