Nokomis and Madison have had some pretty significant battles on the Redskins’ home court.
There was the sectional title game in 2010, a double overtime affair, won by the Trojans 79-77, that was packed to the rafters. There was the sectional semifinal game in 2012, where Nokomis avenged the loss from two years earlier, 51-43, after getting 17 points from Jacob Durbin and 15 from Devon Wright.
And while it has been some time since the two foes met up, Tuesday’s game at Nokomis High School showed that the rivalry still has some fire to it.
With both teams looking for their 20th win of the season, Madison put together a 19-9 fourth quarter run to hand Nokomis a 51-43 loss, oddly enough the same score as their last sectional meeting in Nokomis.
The Trojans picked up a 13-8 lead after the first quarter, with Alex Tosetti scoring four and Evan Herpstreith and Jake Johnson adding two each for Nokomis. The Redskins would rebound though, getting nine points from Carter Sabol to outscore Madison 13-7 and take a 21-20 lead.
The back and forth between the Trojans and Redskins would continue in the second half, with Madison outscoring Nokomis 12-7 in the third quarter to take a four-point lead into the final frame.
The Redskins would jump out in front with six straight points in the opening minutes of the fourth, but Madison would rebound, turning up the defensive pressure and retaking the lead for good down the stretch. The Trojans would hit eight of nine free throws in the fourth quarter to sew up the game, with senior guard Walter Bursey making five of six from the line.
Carter Sabol would finish with 21 points and seven rebounds to lead the Redskins, with nine points coming in the fourth quarter. Alex Tosetti would add in nine points, with Jake Johnson and Evan Herpstreith chipping in seven and six respectively.
Jalen Moore paced the Trojans with 19 points, while Bursey and Javonnie Moore added 12 points apiece.
Nokomis’ next game will be on Friday, Feb. 21, at home against Edinburg. In addition to the regular season finale, the game is also senior night for Carter Sabol, Nick Mascher and Alex Tosetti, and is the last home game for Coach Steve Kimbro, who is retiring after 39 years at the helm of the Redskins.
Fans are encouraged to wear red to show their support for Coach Kimbro and the Nokomis basketball program, with a small ceremony and reception planned after the game. All former Nokomis players and coaches are invited to attend.
