Margaret Pauline Carter, 95, of Litchfield, formerly of Decatur, died Sunday, April 28, 2019, at 7:15 a.m. at Heritage Health: Therapy and Senior Care in Litchfield.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield with the Rev. Fred Kraemer officiating. Burial will be held Saturday, May 4, at 11 a.m. in Graceland Fairlawn Cemetery in Decatur. Family and friends will line up at Plummer Funeral Home in Litchfield at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, to go in procession to the cemetery at 9:15 a.m.
Mrs. Carter was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Chicago, a daughter of Edward H. and Ruth (Andrews) Mercer. She married Richard Allen Carter on Sept. 30, 1950, at her home in Decatur, and he preceded her in death on April 6, 1996.
A graduate of Stephen Decatur High School, she was a homemaker all of her life. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Decatur for 80 years, where she was in charge of the visiting committee for shut-ins, as well as the altar flowers and teaching Sunday school.
For the last eight years, she was a faithful attendee of Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield. While living in Decatur, she served on the Decatur Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the Decatur Club.
Church was a very important part of her life and her faith was a priority for her.
A loving caregiver, she enjoyed cooking, gardening and working on crossword puzzles. She was loving and kind to everyone.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Gartner of Litchfield; and one grandson, Nicholas Gartner of Litchfield.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by son-in-law, Steven Gartner; one sister, Marilyn Mercer; and a nephew, Edward Mercer.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Decatur or the Onward In Faith campaign at Zion Lutheran Church in Litchfield.
