Margery L. Bryer, 91, of Lebanon, died on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at HSHS Saint Elizabeth Hospital in O’Fallon.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 15, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Marine and from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, at the United Church of Christ of Marine. Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning at the church with the Rev. Phillip H. Kershner officiating. Interment will be at Marine Cemetery in Marine. Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Bryer was born on Sunday, Sept. 6, 1931, in St. Louis, MO, the daughter of Socrates and May (nee Houghton) Schantz. She married Robert C. Bryer on July 13, 1950, in Granite City, and he preceded her in death on March 26, 2005.

Mrs. Bryer attended Beaumont High School. Her first job was a cake decorator, at the age of nine. Later she sold tickets at Chain of Rock Amusement Park for nine cents. She and her husband moved to Marine in the 1950’s. They owned and operated American Banner Amusement from 1969 to 1986, which was carnival rides and concessions.

Mrs. Bryer was a member of United Church of Christ of Marine. She enjoyed watching game shows, especially “The Nanny,” “Price Is Right” and St. Louis Cardinal Baseball games. She also liked playing bingo.

Mrs. Bryer is survived by her children, Belva L. (William) Sparks of New Douglas, Linda J. (Larry) Newsom of Lebanon and Jenette A. (Robin) Patterson of Jerseyville; grandchildren, Chad W. (Tracey) Voegele of Raymond, Christie (Brad) Smith of Greenville, T. Robert (Jennifer) Walsh of Marine, Lynnette L. (Ben) Newsom of O’Fallon, Laura A. (Rick) Lynch of Marine,  Leslie J. (Steven) Frierdich of O’Fallon, Beth A. (Daniel) Gray of Jerseyville and Sara M. Patterson of Jerseyville; eighteen great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and brother, Raymond G. (Billie) Schantz of Highland.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a brother , John S. Schantz; sister, Gertrude May Schantz; sisters-in-law, Janet M. (nee Vieth) Schantz and Alice M. (nee Hansel) Schantz.
