Marjorie E. Stokes, 85, of Nokomis, died peacefully at her home on Oct. 22, 2023.

Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 27, at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville with Pastor Edmund Hill officiating.  Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service.  Burial will follow in Rockford Cemetery in Clarksburg. 

Mrs. Stokes was born on Oct. 9, 1938, in Gillespie, the daughter of William Thomas and Geneva LaVonne (Cox) Miller. In 1957, Mrs. Stokes married Everett Brooks, and they were blessed with four children, Christine Ann, Russell Wayne, Thomas Edward and Nancy Ellen. Later in life, Mrs. Stokes found love again and married Oral Stokes, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Stokes was a proud 1956 graduate of Nokomis High School. Her strong work ethic and dedication led her to manage Long John Silver’s for many years and at several different locations. She also owned and operated Donuts, Etc. in Springfield and J&M Cafe in Mechanicsburg. Her dedication to her work was only surpassed by her dedication to her family. 

Mrs. Stokes was a devout member of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Oconee. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she brought the same level of commitment and love to her church community as she did to her family.  In her free time, Mrs. Stokes enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She was an excellent cook, and her family will fondly remember the delicious meals she prepared for them. Mrs. Stokes leaves behind a legacy of love and family. She was also skilled in crocheting and embroidering, often creating beautiful pieces for her loved ones. She had a green thumb and loved spending time in her garden. An avid hunter, she was not afraid to venture into the great outdoors.

Mrs. Stokes leaves behind a legacy of love and family. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, whose love and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, daughter, Christine (John) Hood of Dawson and son, Thomas Brooks of Nokomis; grandchildren, Bobby (Nicole) Hood, Brian (Kaitlyn) Hood, Becky Brooks, Brittney Brooks, Nathan Brooks, Natasha (Eric) Eskra, Niccole Trusty and Janis (Chris) Tom; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Brody, Ramsey, Anna, Ryett, Damian, Branson, Braden, Topanga, Sebastian, Elizabeth, Ethan, Eli and Carter;  sisters, Betty Ann Burrus, Jeannie (Wiley) Mays and Julie (Bill) Helm; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by her parents;  son Russell Brooks and daughter Nancy Brooks; granddaughter Jennifer Brooks; and sisters Mabel Waggoner and Mary Kautz.

Memorials may be made in Mrs. Stokes’ name to the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Association and mailed to Lockart-Green Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St., Shelbyville, IL 62565.
