Marjorie Marie (Hieronymus) Stivers, 96, of Mt. Olive, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, at 11:14 a.m. at Hillsboro Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Ben Fiori officiating. Her body has been donated to Washington University School of Medicine. Becker and Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stivers was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Nokomis, to the late Henry Carl and Anna Luella (Droste) Hieronymus. She married Lawrence Homer Stivers on Feb. 17, 1944, in Grand Island, NE, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 2011.

She attended Nokomis Grade School and graduated from Nokomis High School with the class of 1943. She continued her education at St. John's School of Nursing in Springfield and received her nursing degree. 

After receiving her nursing degree, she worked at hospitals in Grand Island and York, NE, before returning to Illinois. She worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton and Wood River Township Hospital. After retiring from full-time nursing, she became a Pink Lady volunteer.

A devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive, she was also a member of the Wood River Garden Club, Republican Woman's Club and the Mt. Olive Senior Citizens.

She loved traveling with her husband and spending winters in McAllen, TX. She fulfilled a lifelong dream when she purchased and renovated her grandmother's home in Mt. Olive, proudly living there with her husband in their retirement years. She especially loved socializing with her community friends, church friends, and family and truly never met a stranger.

Mrs. Stivers is survived by one son, Lawrence Jerome (Charlotte) Stivers of Stillwater, OK; two daughters, Cheryl Hinkle of Mt. Olive and Lynn (Donald) Haelhka of Huntington Beach, CA; one sister, Milda Burns of Albuquerque, NM; 11 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mable Miller; brother, Merlin Hieronymus; grandson, Stephen Borrowman; and great-great-grandson, Stephen Shiplett.
