While their postseason had ended in the regional semifinal against Macon Meridian, the Nokomis High School softball team still had some business to take care of as they took on Marquette on Tuesday, May 28, in Nokomis.
The Lady Redskins were trying to play spoiler in the game as Marquette entered with a 3-0 conference mark, having beaten Metro-East Lutheran 11-2, East Alton-Wood River 4-1 and Bunker Hill 7-0. Nokomis was 1-1 in the Prairie State with a 7-1 win over Metro-East Lutheran and a 7-6 loss to East Alton-Wood River.
Nokomis' hopes of an upset would come to an end in the fifth inning unfortunately, as Marquette scored two runs in the top of the inning, then held the Skins scoreless to complete the 11-0 short-game win.
Prior to the final two runs, Marquette got a run in the first inning and four runs in both the second and fourth. The offensive productivity was too much to contend with for the Redskins as they managed just one hit, a single by Delaney Keiser, against the Explorers' ace, Taylor Whitehead.
Maddie Sowarsh would strike out eight batters in her final time on the mound for Nokomis. The Redskin senior finished the year with 150 strikeouts, after posting 146 strikeouts as a junior.
It was also the final appearance for Emily Cesaretti, who batted .263 with a home run, 11 RBIs and 15 runs scored this year. Both will be missed, but with a year of experience, the 2020 edition of the Lady Redskins could improve on this year's 8-17-1 mark.
