Fifty-five Hillsboro boys have finished a full week of practice under head coach Aaron Duff and his assistants, Andy Stritzel, Evan Malloy, Jeremy Connor, Corbin Govaia, Roger Fath and Garrett Young. Friday evening of this week (Aug. 23) the squad will go public with the sports drink scrimmage beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is at least one bottle of a sport drink to be used by the players as the season progresses.
On display will be the talents of 11 seniors: Dylan McCammack, Curtis Segrest, Joey Lipe, Jonah Harkins, Hayden Pfiefer, Brett Cunningham, Gavyn Roberts, Skyler Edrington, Finn Tysko, Blake Clark, and Dom Bates;
14 juniors: Jace Tuetken, Andrew Law, Ben Taylor, Jude Bertolino, Drew Willman, Marshall Hughes, Jackson Hamby, Brady Huber, Aaron Wille, Riley Dugan, Zinnen Kenney, Cooper Holcomb, Tyson Compagni, and Chance Murray;
15 sophomores: Dalton Reynolds, Austin Edwards, Aiden Scroggins, Kayden Liebscher, Garrett Schaake, Jayden Jacobs, Joe Keiser, Maddox Scott, Trey Snider, Aaron Smiddy, Ian Malloy, Magnus Wells, Zain Kenney, Bryce Connor, and Carson Maddaleno;
15 freshmen: Zane Duff, Tanner Clayton, Ben Huber, Dillon Devlin, Jaben Compton, Blaze Helton, Antonio Romero, Reese Morford, Cole Spensberger, Dale Moses, Sebastian Snider, Kyle Butler, Bryce Chamberlein, Nick Hockett, and Cameron Hacke.
The next week has public activity too. The community-wide pep rally at the Moose Club ($5.00 buys entrance, a hot dog (or two), a drink, chips, and a chance to see the players individually introduced; those festivities begin at 6 p.m. and generally last an hour.
The first game of what hopefully will become a playoff drive is the next evening, Friday, Aug. 30, when the Piasa Southwestern Birds appear at Sawyer Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. This may be the last season for South Central Conference football as reorganization into districts seems imminent. Tentative starting lineups for the Southwestern game will be in Thursday's Journal-News.
