Melvin Ernest Martin, 80, of Mount Olive, died at 5:52 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 21, 2019, at Heritage Health of Staunton.
Visitation will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct. 26,until the time of service, at Becker and Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Old Orchard Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. Becker and Son Funeral Home in Mt. Olive is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Martin was born on Sept. 26, 1939, in St. Louis, MO, to Claude Martin and Elsie Wolf. He married Ellen Joanne Askew on June 14, 1975, at Bethel Baptist Church in Troy. He attended schools in Belleville.
Mr. Martin was employed as a Security Guard in Cahokia. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Troy. Mr. Martin's family describes him as a workaholic, who loved crafts and western movies. He loved horses and working at Fairmont.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife; children, Terry Martin of Hillsboro, Timmy Martin of Mt. Olive, Benjamin Martin of Mt. Olive, Trina Martin of Mt. Olive and Angela (Pete) Kirkham of Mt. Olive; a brother, Claude Martin of Belleville; a sister, Betty Ann (Mike) Parks of Belleville; and grandchildren, JoAnn Kirkham, Serenity Martin, Autumn Stagner, Cole Hendrickson and Zack Scoville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Richard, Sr., Robert, Donald, Richard Martin, Jr., and Jerry Koons; a sister, Carolyn Weller; and his step-mother, Josephine Robison Martin.
