Mercenaries Rugby will be hosting a match against the Springfield Celts on Saturday, April 27, in memory of former Mercenary and Hillsboro High School grad Gavin Twitty.
Twitty, who was a football, track and wrestling standout for the Toppers, passed away in November after a car accident between Donnellson and Greenville. He was 22 years old.
"Gavin was a true rugger through and through. He had such a passion for rugby," a post on the Mercenaries Facebook page read. "Gavin was a beast in our #15 spot and he left some serious shoes to fill."
Friends and family are invited to attend the match, which begins at 1 p.m. at the Hillsboro Sports Complex. A social for all players and fans will be held after the match and friends are invited to share stories about Twitty.
Can koozies, bracelets and T-shirts in memory of Twitty will also be available at the event. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/mercenariesrugby.
In a show of support, another team, the Belleville-based Rowdies Rugby Football Club is honoring Twitty's memory by not wearing the number 15, Twitty's number, during matches this season.
