Mildred “Millie” Overholtz, 96, of Litchfield, formerly of Glen Carbon, died Sunday, March 1, 2020 in Litchfield.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. at New Bethel Methodist Church in Glen Carbon. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Penny Barber officiating. Burial will be held in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Glen Carbon. Williamson Funeral Home in Staunton is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Overholtz was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Granite City, the daughter of the late Jesse C. and Beulah (Russell) Sparks. She married Clifford Horton in 1943. She later married John Overholtz in 1953, and  he preceded her in death.

She was a devoted wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid Cardinals fan, watching almost every televised Cardinals game with the sportscasters muted, while keeping score on her homemade scorecards.

She and her husband, John, could always be found at the library, watching plays at SIUE, dining at their favorite restaurants or trying new things. Her greatest joy was being a mother.

Described by her sons as selfless, she was giving of her time and unconditional love and support to her family. Her grandchildren recall many happy memories, such as drugstore counter meals, fishing, collecting wildflowers along the railroad tracks and making Christmas hard candy.

She could always be seen with a project in her hand, whether it was quilting, crocheting or painting projects, gifting the majority of her projects to loved ones. She quilted with her daughters-in-law, Judy and Denise, for many years at New Bethel Methodist Church in Glen Carbon, where she was a member for much of her life.

Mrs. Overholtz is survived by two sons, Wayne (Judy) Horton and Jim (Denise) Overholtz; nine grandchildren, Dave (Christy) Horton, Bob (Denise) Horton, Julie (Mike Thompson) Horton, Jeff (Jennifer) Horton, Lisa (Shanne Hanson) Jackson, Chris (Kaley Lott) Overholtz, Brenton (Virginie) Smith, Amy (Donald) Ownby and Evan (Deybie) Smith; 18 great-grandchildren, Jake Horton, Katie Horton, Matthew Horton, Michael Horton, Savannah Russell, Aubree Horton, Avery Horton, Ryland Horton, Meredith Helm, Sophia Jackson, Natalia Jackson, Joshua Hanson, KJ Lott, Erin Smith, Dylin Ownby, Landon Ownby, Hunter Ownby and Donald Ownby II.

In addition to her parents and husband of 44 years, she was preceded in death by one brother, Jesse D. Sparks; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Overholtz.
