The Nokomis Redskins traveled to Gillespie on Wednesday, March 27, in search of their first win, but took a 16-6 loss in six innings.
After using three of their best arms the night before in a tough loss to Marquette, the Skins went to a committee of pitchers to try and beat the Miners, who came into the game with a 4-2 record.
The game remained scoreless until the third inning, when the Skins got a run across to break the tie.
The Miners scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but Nokomis responded. In the top of the fourth, the Redskins scored five runs including back-to-back shots by Ryan Janssen and Drew Masset.
The outburst put the Skins ahead 6-2 but just as they did in the third inning, the Miners answered with something better. They scored six runs of their own, giving them an 8-6 advantage.
The next two innings were all Gillespie, as eight more Miner runs signaled a short-gaming of the Redskins.
Janssen was a bright spot for the Skins, going 2-for-3 with the home run.
The loss drops the Redskins to 0-3 on the season. Weather permitting, the Skins will play the North Mac Panthers on Monday, April 1, followed by a trip to East Alton-Wood River on Tuesday.
