Missouri Man Arrested After Nokomis Gunshot

A Missouri man is in Montgomery County Jail after shots were fired outside a Nokomis bar Thursday night, Jan. 14.

Steven L. Lafata, 39, of Union, MO, faces three felony weapons charges: aggravated discharge of a firearm, a felon possession of a firearm, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.  Bond was set at $150,000 Friday by Judge Jim Roberts in Montgomery County Circuit Court.

The Nokomis Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Illinois State Police responded to West Front Street in Nokomis at 10:18 p.m. Thursday after a shot was fired during a verbal argument outside a tavern.

According to Nokomis Police Chief Bill Kenny, another shot was fired as a bar employee wrestled the firearm away from the suspect, and that shot hit a parked vehicle.

Lafata is scheduled to appear in court with his attorney on Friday, Jan. 22.
