The Morrisonville/Lincolnwood baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Monday, May 6, to finish off a 6-5 comeback win over Mt. Olive in Morrisonville.
The Mohawks would spot the visiting Wildcats five runs in the first three innings, as Mt. Olive scored a solo run in the first and two more in both the second and third.
After scoreless fourth and fifth innings for both teams, Morrisonville began their comeback, picking up a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Jhadyn Walker led off the inning with a double, then two batters later, scored on another double, this time by John Wolf. Wolf's courtesy runner, Will Jenkins, would move to third in the next at-bat when Devin Brown singled to right field and would score on an error by the Mt. Olive second baseman to cut the lead to 5-2.
Wolf, who came on in relief of starting pitcher Kyle Bloome in the fifth inning, allowed a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, but got three quick outs after that to keep it a three-run game.
The Wildcats would get the first two outs of the inning, but would run into trouble with a walk by Sam Herman. Mt. Olive's woes would continue as Jhadyn Walker singled and Isaac Ferrill walked to load the bases.
The third base on balls of the inning would put John Wolf at first and push in Herman, while Devin Brown singled to center to score Walker and tie the game at 5-5.
With two outs and a full count, Braxton Schmedeke would send everyone home happy with a walkoff single that drove in Wolf's courtesy runner, Will Jenkins, and gave the Mohawks their fifth MSM Conference victory.
Morrisonville would outhit the Wildcats 10-9 in the game, with six hits coming in the final two innings. Devin Brown would go 2-for-3 with two runs driven in, while Jhadyn Walker had a pair of hits with two runs scored.
On the mound, Wolf would earn his first varsity win, pitching three innings of two-hit ball with four strikeouts and zero walks. Kyle Bloome would pitch the first four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks, striking out six along the way.
Morrisonville vs. Lutheran
A comeback wasn't in the cards for the Mohawks on Tuesday, May 7, though, as they fell to Springfield Lutheran 4-0 in Morrisonville.
The Crusaders would get two runs in the first, one run in the third and one run in the sixth to finish off the win. Both teams would have five hits in the game, but Morrisonville was unable to get any of those runners across home plate.
The Mohawks' best chance came in the bottom of the second inning, when Devin Brown and Grant Jones both singled, followed by a walk to Dalton Thomas. But all three of those base runners came with two outs and Lutheran was able to escape further trouble with a pop fly to center.
They would also load the bases with two outs in the seventh, after walks to Brown, Jhett Walker and a single by Andrew Skinner, but again, the Crusaders avoided disaster and got the final out.
Andrew Skinner would be solid in the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four. Sam Herman pitched the final two innings, giving up one unearned run on a walk, a passed ball and a ground out, while striking out two.
Skinner was also one of three seniors honored before the game for senior night. The other two were Dade Pitchford, who also had a base hit for the Mohawks, and statistician Cameron Krager.
Morrisonville will be in Springfield on Thursday, May 9, for a return match against the Crusaders, followed by a trip to Pana on Friday, May 10, to play the Panthers.
