Members of the Montgomery County Fair Board voted to cancel this year’s fair at their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, May 5, in Butler.
“Tonight the Montgomery County Fair Board made a very tough decision,” said longtime board member Marti Benning of Raymond. “We will cancel the 2020 fair. Due to the public health guidelines, we didn’t feel that we could provide social distancing for the crowds that come.”
At this time, the board is hoping to have a queen pageant at a later date, and looking to the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs organization for guidance.
They are also looking to have a fall demolition derby if restrictions permit.
“The last thing we want is for our family-focused events to create a situation that would put those families at risk,” Benning said. “We apologize to our community. I know that some people will think that this decision is unnecessary, and will be angered, but we did what we feel is best for our community.”
