The Morrisonville/Lincolnwood baseball team picked up a big MSM conference win over Pawnee on Thursday, April 11, beating the Indians 6-3 in Morrisonville.
Good things came in threes on Thursday as both teams scored in three-run bursts in three different innings.
The Mohawks would strike first though, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Skinner walked to lead off the inning, then moved to second after a single by Evan Hopper two batters later.
Three more singles by Dade Pitchford, Sam Herman and Jhadyn Walker would drive in both Skinner and Hopper and load the bases for Isaac Ferrill. Ferrill would get the bat on the ball and reach base on an error by the Indians’ second baseman, allowing Pitchford to score from third and make it 3-0.
Pawnee would tie the game in the top of the third, getting a single by A.J. Gary and another base runner off an error on a ground ball by Luke Kratochvil. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, Gary would score on a passed ball and Kratochvil scored on an error off a hit by Connor Hennemann.
Morrisonville starter Evan Hopper would get the next batter out on a ground ball to second, which allowed Hennemann to move to third. Hennemann would then tie the game on a passed ball before Hopper could strike out Jack Kratochvil to end the inning.
Morrisonville would load the bases in the bottom of the third on singles by Pitchford and Herman and a walk by Ferrill, but Pawnee got out of the jam to keep the game tied 3-3.
After Hopper struck out the side in the top of the fourth, Morrisonville went back to the rack, put together a two-out rally to regain the lead. Skinner walked to start the inning and moved to second on a ground ball by Shawn Goebel. He would take third on a steal during Hopper’s at-bat, which ended in a pop out to third base.
Skinner would make it 4-3 on a passed ball, but the scoring wasn’t over as Pitchford picked up his third hit of the game. Herman followed Pitchford’s lead and added his third single of the game, while Jhadyn Walker made it three straight base hits to score Pitchford and make it 5-3. Herman would add another run to the total moments later, on an error by the Pawnee first baseman, before Pawnee could get out of the inning.
Hopper would take over from there, allowing just two base runners, both on errors, in the final three innings, striking out two of the final three batters he faced to secure the seven-inning complete game win. The Lincolnwood junior would finish the game with eight strikeouts, no walks, no earned runs and only two hits allowed.
He would have plenty of help on offense as the Mohawks outhit the Indians 12-2, with Hopper (2-for-4) one of four players with multiple hits. Jhadyn Walker would also go 2-for-4, while Dade Pitchford and Sam Herman were both 3-for-4.
Morrisonville was scheduled to play a doubleheader with the Indians, but rain suspended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. At that point, the game was tied 5-5, with the Indians scoring two runs in the first innning and Morrisonville tying the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. Both teams would find the plate three times in the next two half innings as the score stood at 5-5 before it was delayed.
That game will be resumed later in the season, but until then, the Mohawks are scheduled to play at Mt. Olive on Tuesday, April 16, before returning home on Thursday, April 18, to host the Wildcats.
