New Coach, New Start For Hillsboro Girls Golf

Posted

It was a return in every sense of the word on Tuesday, Aug. 18, as the Hillsboro girls golf team teed off at Timber Lakes Golf Course in Staunton.

Not only was it the first varsity sporting event of the 2020-21 school year for the Toppers, but it was the first taste of varsity sports since the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March.

The match also marked the return of Bob Allen as the head coach of the Lady Hiltoppers after a three-year absence. Allen, the Swiss Army knife of the HHS coaching roster, coached girls golf from 2012 through 2016 before taking over the Hillsboro baseball program and scaling back his efforts, which include duties as an assistant girls basketball coach as well. In the summer, Allen is also scheduled to coach boys track as well.

Allen inherits a team that returns four players from last year’s top six, with Erin Kistner and Felisity Luevano graduating this past May.

Meagan Jorn, Alex Frailey, Aurelie Granito and Anna Cowell all return for the Lady Hiltoppers and were joined by Sam Frailey and Gracie Brink in the opening match against the Lady Bulldogs.

Jorn would lead the way with a 59 on the par-36 course at Timber Lakes, while siblings Alex and Sam Frailey both shot 64 for the day.

Brink would be four strokes behind the siblings with a 68, while Granito and Colwell were fifth and sixth for the Toppers with a 72 and a 74.

Overall, Hillsboro would shoot a 255 on the day, 42 strokes behind the Lady Bulldogs, who were led by medalist Analise Best’s 44. Greenville was scheduled to be at the match too, but an outbreak in their area forced the Comets to press pause on the school year until Aug. 31, and athletics as well.

The Lady Hiltoppers will be at home for their next match as they host Pana at the Hillsboro Country Club at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20. The HHS boys will also be at the match for their season opener against Pana and Vandalia.
