It’s hard to imagine a better start to the 2020 AMA Flat Track Grand Championships than the one Chase Saathoff had on Monday, July 20.
Racing on the half mile at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, IN, the Hillsboro 14-year-old went four-for-four on the day, posting four wins against some of the top young amateur riders in the country.
Opening up in the 450cc Modified class, Satthoff beat out Tarren Santero of Petaluma, CA, and Johnny Bova III of Wadsworth, OH, for the top spot.
In the 251 to 500cc DTX race, Saathoff stayed hot, beating out Flint, MI’s Billy Ross and Lockeford, CA’s Tyler Raggio for first.
Saathoff ended the day with a pair of 450cc races. He would beat Ezra Brusky of Milwaukee, WI, and Travis E. Petton IV of Ramona, CA, in the 450cc Open Singles class, then finished the day with a victory in the 450cc Open Modified class, with Santero and Brusky finishing second and third.
Unfortunately, rain kept the racers off the track for much of Tuesday’s TT races at Plymouth and continued on Wednesday to knock out the short track races as well. Heats were completed for the TT races and finishes in the qualifying accounted for the final scoring. Saathoff would win all four of his heats and would finish first in the points twice, second once and fourth once.
On Friday, July 24, they’ll wrap things up with more action on the half mile, this time at the Ashland County Fairgrounds in Ashland, OH.
