Amid ongoing social distancing guidelines, the Nokomis School District has set a Saturday, June 6, graduation date for both Nokomis Junior High School and Nokomis High School.
The eighth grade graduation will begin at 10 a.m. and the high school graduation will begin at 2 p.m.
Only one vehicle per graduate will be allowed, and vehicles should enter through the north entrance by 9:30 a.m. for eighth graders and 1:30 p.m. for seniors. They should proceed to a table set up in front of the unit office.
A card with the graduate’s name and number will be placed on the windshield. Graduates will also receive honor cords at this time.
District staff and local police will be on hand to help direct traffic.
Vehicles will be lined up in alphabetical order by the graduates’ last names, and will then parade by the football field to the front of the building. One vehicle at a time will be allowed on the circle drive with five minutes allotted per graduate.
The graduate will step out of the vehicle to receive his or her diploma and walk across the stage for a picture. James Ryan of NokoPhoto will be on hand to take pictures, and the event will be recorded on video. One passenger in each vehicle will be permitted to get out and take photos.
Graduates will then return to their vehicles and leave. Due to ongoing guidelines from Governor JB Pritzker, spectators will not be allowed on the road or in the grass area in front of the school. Restroom facilities will also be unavailable.
Participants are encouraged to maintain social distancing and wear face masks when on school grounds.
This year’s valedictorian, salutatorian and honor graduates will be contacted on June 1, to discuss a date to present their speeches.
During the week of June 8, the district will put together a final video of the graduation with speeches and pictures, and will be shared on YouTube when completed.
