Nokomis Homecoming Begins Friday, July 12


Nokomis Homecoming is set  for Friday, July 12, Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14. This will mark the 73rd year for the annual celebration which is held at Memorial Park in Nokomis.

The festivities will kick off on  Friday, July 12, at 6 p.m. when the carnival and the KC Council #2189 beer tent opens for the weekend. Rides will run until 11 p.m. and the beer tent will close at 12 a.m. The Nokomis Homecoming pageants, Miss Nokomis Homecoming Queen, Jr. Miss, Little Miss and Little Mister, will begin at 6 p.m. on the south stage.

The Nokomis Area Fire Protection District's yearly Bingo games will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the tennis courts. The slow pitch softball tournament will start at 7 p.m. and Bum & Co will perform live on the south stage from 8 to 11 p.m.

Events will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, with the 3-on-3 basketball tournament put on by the Nokomis Park Board. The games will take place in the high school gym and will run until 4 p.m. The slow pitch softball tournament will resume at 9 a.m. and  the Nokomis Area Fire Protection District will start their much anticipated chicken cook at 11 a.m. The carnival will resume at 4 p.m. and run until 11 p.m.  

The Nokomis Homecoming Association's parade will start at 6 p.m. The route will begin at City Park, go through downtown Nokomis, and conclude at Nokomis High School. This year's theme is "Happiness Is" and local businesses, organizations and individuals, as well as those from surrounding communities, are encouraged to join in the parade and compete for cash prizes.

The KC's beer tent will re-open at 6 p.m. and run until midnight. Bingo is set to begin at 8 p.m. and will continue until 11 p.m. Saturday night's entertainment include the Amazing Dudley Magic Show, which will be held on the south stage from 8 to 9 p.m. The Nokomis KCs will host Lakeside Entertainment DJ from 8 p.m. to midnight at the beer tent. 

Nokomis' celebrations will continue on Sunday, July 14, with the Old Tyme Tractor Show hosted by Dennis Aumann. The show will be held on the north lawn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The slow pitch softball tournament will pick up for the final day at 9 a.m. The beer tent will open at noon and shut down for the year at 11 p.m. The Nokomis Area Fire Protection District's washer tournament will start at 1 p.m. at the beer tent. Registration for the tournament will be an hour before. Rick Jones' cruise-in will take place on the north lawn from 1 to 4 p.m.

The BRS Baseball Museum's 1850's Vintage Baseball Tournament will begin at 1 p.m. on the grassy field between the high school baseball field and the south diamond. The Tot-Rod pedal tractor pull will be held on the basketball courts at 2 p.m. with sign up slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.

The carnival will run from 3 to 9 p.m. and Bingo will start at 6 p.m. on the tennis courts. Nokomis favorite Wiplash will take the south stage from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., thanks to the Homecoming Association. The Nokomis Homecoming celebration will culminate with a fireworks display on the high school baseball field at 9 p.m.

Carnival rides will take between two and three tickets apiece. An advance sheet of 24 tickets is currently on sale for $20. Advance sale tickets may be purchased at Kroger, First National Bank of Nokomis and Nokomis Savings Bank, until 3:30 p.m. on Friday, July 12. Tickets may also be purchased at the carnival for $22 per sheet of 22 tickets or $1.25 per individual ticket.
