The Nokomis Redskins started off their championship run at the 2019 Montgomery County baseball tournament with an 11-1 victory over the Morrisonville/Lincolnwood co-op team on Saturday, April 13.
Morrisonville would get the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, but Nokomis answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame, plus four runs in the second and two more in the fourth.
Dade Pitchford would get a two-out double in the top of the first for Morrisonville off Nokomis starter Nick Mascher, scoring Evan Hopper who had walked and stole second in the previous at-bat.
Nokomis would answer quickly though as Alex Tosetti, Mascher and Drew Masset all singled against Morrisonville starter Andrew Skinner. Ryan Janssen would put the Redskins on the board with a double as Nokomis led 2-1 after Tosetti and Mascher scored.
A second straight double, by Evan Herpstreith, would make it 3-1,while a ground out by Carter Sabol allowed Janssen to score and make it 4-1.
Nokomis would take a four-run lead with their third double of the inning as Marc Grigoroff sent a shot to center field that scored Herpstreith. Skinner would get out of the inning after Grigoroff was called out for interference and Jake Johnson was called out on strikes.
Tosetti would get the ball rolling again in the second inning as he singled with one out. After a fly out by Mascher, Masset singled to move Tosetti to third. Janssen would reach base on a Mohawks’ error, which allowed Tosetti to score and Masset to move to third.
Another single, by Herpstreith, and an error off the bat of Sabol would bring home Masset and Herpstreith as Nokomis took a commanding 9-1 lead.
Not much would happen offensively for either team until the bottom of the fourth, when the Redskins got to reliever Kyle Bloome, who had come on in the third.
After a ground ball for the first out, Janssen, Herpstreith and Sabol all walked to load the bases. Marc Grigoroff would reach first on an error by the Mohawks, which allowed Janssen’s courtesy runner, Quintin Jamieson, and Herpstrieth to score and make it 11-1.
Morrisonville would threaten in the top of the fifth with a walk to Kyle Bloome and a double by Jhadyn Walker, but the Mohawks were unable to get the game back under the mercy rule and the Redskins won in five.
Nick Mascher was solid on the mound for Nokomis, allowing just one run on four hits in five innings. He’d strike out three and walk two. Andrew Skinner took the loss, giving up nine runs (five earned) on nine hits with one strikeout. Kyle Bloome allowed two runs (none of which were earned) on one hit with one strikeout and four walks.
Offensively, Evan Herpstreith was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three more driven in, while Drew Masset and Alex Tosetti both had two hits and two runs scored for Nokomis. Marc Grigoroff also had three RBIs for the Redskins.
Morrisonville was held to four hits, two of which came from Dade Pitchford, who had a single and a double. Jhadyn Walker would add a double for the Mohawks, while Jhett Walker contributed a single.
The result moved Morrisonville to the third place game and Nokomis to the championship. The two teams will face each other again on April 26, in Morrisonville.
