The Nokomis Lady Redskins had their first home court advantage of the 2019 season Thursday night, Dec. 5, as they hosted the Lady Trojans of Madison.
Madison was an inexperienced, newly-formed team this year, so the Skins knew they had a good opportunity to capture their third victory of the season.
The Skins captured the tip and immediately took an early lead. Knocking down shots, getting rebounds, and well-executed defense gave the Skins a 23-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Wanting to keep a large lead, the Lady Redskins came out in the second quarter with the same intensity. Allowing more shots while lacking defense, the Skins needed to step it up a bit offensively. At half the Skins were still ahead of the Lady Trojans 12-38.
Coming out at half, the Skins did not want to lose any intensity and momentum so they could prove they were the dominant team of the match-up. Determined to keep a large point-gap, the Lady Redskins did not allow the Lady Trojans to score in the third quarter, outscoring them by 17 and making the score 55-12.
With a running clock and large lead coming out in the final quarter, the Skins won the match-up, 64-14.
For the night, the Lady Redskins were led in scoring by Audrey Sabol, Natalie Engelman, and Macee Eisenbarth. Sabol had 17, Engelman added nine and Eisenbarth had 16 herself. Sabol and Eisenbarth also assisted in the victory with rebounds (Sabol 6, Eisenbarth 7).
The win improved the Lady Redskins record to 3-4 for the 2019 season.
Win Slips Away
The Lady Redskins were on the road Saturday afternoon, Dec. 7, for a match-up against the Lady Panthers of North Mac.
The Skins walked into Panther country getting ready to face an aggressive North Mac squad. Even with an intense game ahead, the Skins knew it could be a winnable game with well-executed offense and defense.
The Lady Redskins won the tip ball, but soon found it would be a difficult day for them offensively. It was a slow first quarter for both teams, as both of them only scored six points to start off the game.
The Skins were able to take a three point lead in the second quarter, even with lacking offensive, making the score 15-12 at half.
Coming out at half the Lady Redskins had confidence that they had the game in the bag, but the third quarter was anything but good for the Skins. It was a game changing quarter for the Panthers as they out scored the Skins 22 to eight, with stepped up intensity.
They simply out hustled the Skins to every loose ball, got the rebounds, and stepped up offensively. The Lady Redskins seemed to shut down with players in foul trouble as they trailed the Panthers 34-23.
The Skins needed to give it all they had and put their heart into every play if they were going to capture a win against the Panthers. They gave it a good shot, but were ultimately defeated 40-32, allowing the Panthers their second win of the season. It was a frustrating day for the Skins as they dropped to 3-5 on the season.
Macee Eisenbarth had 11 points and seven rebounds. Audrey Sabol added eight points. Emily Cress added four rebounds, and Natalie Engelman added six points herself.
The Lady Redskins will travel to Metro-East Lutheran Monday night, Dec. 9, for their second conference game of the season.
