The Nokomis Redskins were able to get back-to-back home games in early this week, starting on Monday, April 22, when they hosted Altamont. Behind five solid innings from Drew Masset, the Skins picked up a 6-2 win over the Indians.
Nokomis didn’t waste any time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Masset took advantage of the run support and didn’t give up a run until the fourth inning.
That one run would be the only run he allowed in his five innings, as he gave up only four hits and struck out four.
The Skins picked up one more run in the fifth, extending their lead to 4-1. The sixth inning was the big one for Nokomis, though, as they picked up two more insurance runs, and took a 6-1 lead into the final inning.
Evan Herpstreith relieved Masset after his five innings of work, tossing the final two innings. Despite giving up a run in the last inning, the Redskins took the 6-2 win over the Indians, a team they could see early on in the postseason.
Nick Mascher was the only Redskin with multiple hits, as he went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Nokomis vs. Central A&M
Nokomis picked up their second win in as many days on Tuesday, April 23, short-gaming the Central A&M Raiders by a score of 10-0.
Carter Sabol was on the bump for the Redskins and the Raiders had no answer for him. Sabol pitched all five innings of the game and gave up only five hits. Of the 15 batters he retired, 14 of them came via the strikeout.
With the dominant performance from Sabol, all the Redskins needed was a run. The Skins scored one in the first, none in the second and then put up more than one run in each of the final three innings, giving them an easy 10-0 win.
Ryan Janssen and Landon Engelman both had two hits for Nokomis, who moved their record to 12-4 with the win.
With rain postponing their match-up with Metro-East Lutheran on Wednesday, Nokomis’ next game will be Thursday, April 25, at Hillsboro. The Skins beat Hillsboro in the Montgomery County Tournament last weekend 5-1. Nokomis will also play Friday at Morrisonville, who they also beat in the county tournament.
