The joy of a new year was doubled in Nokomis as donors matched the $10,000 challenge set forth by an anonymous couple who wanted to make their contribution to the Nokomis Memorial Park Pool project as big as possible.
In just 11 days, donors contributed the other half of what would turn out to be a $20,000 grand total, with $5,000 coming from another anonymous donor.
With the recent surge, the Nokomis Park District now has nearly $267,000 of the $350,000 needed for the project.
“We welcome any other folks to issue future challenges to raise the rest of the money as we had some donors contacting us after the challenge was met to see if they could help make up the difference,” said Roz O’Malley. “These individuals have said they would contribute to another challenge if one is made.”
Construction was originally scheduled to begin on the new pool last summer, but COVID-19 delays from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (who granted the project a $350,000 matching grant) pushed that date back. Still, hopes are high that construction can begin this coming spring and families will be able to utilize the new pool by next summer. For those who would like to donate to the project, donations can be mailed to the Nokomis Memorial Park Pool, P.O. Box 153, Nokomis, IL, 62075.
