Nokomis Rolls Miners For Second Win

After a couple close losses, the Nokomis boys basketball team shook off the early season rust and dominated Gillespie from the opening quarter on Tuesday, Dec. 10, posting a 54-29 win over the Miners.

Playing in "The Pit" in Gillespie, the Redskins held the hosts to just one field goal, a three-pointer by Alex Ottersburg, as they rolled up a 14-3 lead. Carter Sabol, Evan Herpstreith and Kendall Knodle had four points apiece, while Seth Johnson added two free throws for the Skins.

The Miners would keep it closer in the second quarter, thanks to Anthony Kravanya, who had all nine Gillespie points, but Nokomis would still increase their lead. Getting five more points from Herpstreith and four from Knodle, Nokomis would build up a 15-point lead at the break to make it 27-12.

The Redskins continued to pad that margin in the second half, coming up with a 9-of-10 performance from the free-throw line. Sabol was 2-for-2 from the stripe in the third quarter as he led the Skins with eight points in the period, half of their point total in the third.

The Miners would hit a pair of threes, but still managed just 11 points as they trailed by 20 going into the fourth.

The Nokomis defense would not allow them to get any closer as Gillespie managed just two field goals and a pair of free throws in the fourth.

Nokomis would also have two field goals, but was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to boost their lead to 25 and finish off the 54-29 victory, their second of the season.

Sabol would finish with 19 points and 13 rebounds for the double-double, adding in four assists along the way. Herpstreith, who was 4-for-4 in the fourth quarter from the foul line, finished with 15 points and five assists.

Both Knodle and Alex Tosetti would add in eight points, with Tosetti also picking up three steals. Nick Mascher and Seth Johnson rounded out the scoring with two points apiece for Nokomis, who was 19-for-46 from the field.

Gillespie was held to 11 fewer shots as they went 10-of-35 from the field with three three-pointers. Kravanya would be the only Miner with more than five points, finishing with a team-best 12.

Nokomis will take on East Alton-Wood River on Friday, Dec. 13, followed by a trip to Raymond for the T. Todt Shootout, where they will take on Southwestern at 3:30 p.m.
