On Wednesday, April 17, the Nokomis Redskins baseball club completed the Montgomery County sweep as the Redskins defeated the Purple Panthers 20-4 in Litchfield. The win would be the third Montgomery County school that Nokomis has defeated as they moved to 10-4 on the year.
The Skins would not wait long to add runs to the board in this contest as they would tally four first inning runs.
All the runs tallied by Nokomis in the inning would be scored with two outs. Nick Mascher would be the first Nokomis batter to reach base as he would single in between out number one and two. Two walks later, Mascher would find himself on third base as Evan Herpstreith and Carter Sabol would occupy the other two spots to load the bases with two outs.
Mascher would put the first run on the board as he would score on a passed ball; on the play both Herpstreith and Sabol would move up a base. Ryan Janssen would help Nokomis add a couple more runs as he would single in both Herpstreith and Sabol, giving Nokomis an early 3-0 lead.
Janssen would make it 4-0 as he would scamper around the bases and would finally touch home plate on another passed ball in the inning to give Nokomis a 4-0 lead after the visitor half of the first inning.
Nokomis again would find ways to add runs to their total as they would rally together to add seven more runs in the second inning, giving them 11 runs. Alex Tosetti would move the Nokomis score to 5-0 when he would single in Benny Clavin from second base.
Mascher would load the bases again for the Purple Panthers as he would join two other Redskins on the base paths. Drew Massett would give Nokomis two more runs when he singled in Tosetti and Cooper Bertolino, giving Nokomis a 7-0 lead, with no outs recorded in the inning.
Herpstreith would get in on the fun as he would single in Mascher for his first RBI of the inning, moving the Nokomis lead to 8-0.
The Redskins would not be done scoring in the inning as Sabol would add two more runs with his two bag hit and Jansen would add his third RBI in two innings to give Nokomis an 11-0 lead after an inning and a half of action.
After going up by ten-plus runs, Nokomis looked to short game Litchfield as they would add three more runs to their total in the third inning. These runs would come off one swing of the bat as Carter Sabol would connect on a home run scoring Mascher, Herpstreith and himself, giving Nokomis a 14-0 lead after two innings.
Looking to at least extend the contest past the fifth inning, Litchfield would need to crack into the double digit advantage held by Nokomis.
In the bottom half of the third inning Litchfield would gain back the three runs they lost in the top half of the inning.
After putting two runners on the base paths in the second inning, Litchfield would finally crack into the scoring column in the third inning. After the first out of the inning was recorded, Jeremy Frazier and Jacob Frerichs would reach the base paths with back-to-back walks. Billy Beckham would put the first run on the board as he would single in Frazier from second base run, dropping the score to 14-1.
Nick Braasch and Blaine Stewart would both add runs to the Purple Panthers' total as they would both single in a run, moving the score to 14-3.
The Purple Panthers would not be able to add any more runs to the board, but Litchfield would do some damage to the Nokomis lead.
After a scoreless inning, the Redskins would look to increase their lead to prevent the contest to extend past the fifth inning. In the top of the fifth, the Skins would add six more runs to their total as they would lead 20-3 heading into Litchfield's last chance to extend the contest.
Tosetti and Masset would both add two runs to the Nokomis lead as the Redskins would make sure the Purple Panthers would have a difficult time extending the contest.
In their last chance at scoring runs, the Purple Panthers would add a run in the bottom half of the inning when Chase Hires scored Nick Brassch.
The run would narrow the Redskin lead to 20-4, but the Skins would already have built a big lead in the contest. The run would be the last run in the contest as Nokomis finished off the 20-4 win.
After their games on Thursday and Friday were both washed out, Litchfield will look to rebound against Gillespie on Tuesday, April 23, at home. Nokomis will be at home for their next game, when they take on Altamont at 4:30 p.m.
