The 2019 season came to an end for the Litchfield Purple Panthers on Friday, Oct. 25, with a 68-6 loss to Carlinville at Lloyd Hill Field.
The Cavaliers scored the first 26 points of the game, getting touchdown runs of 42 and seven yards from Colton DeLong, a six-yard score from Colton Robinson and a 34-yard pass reception from Michael Byots to Lonny Rosentreter, all of which came in the first nine minutes of the first quarter.
Litchfield’s lone score came after the Rosentreter touchdown, consisting of a 14 play drive that was extended by two pass interference calls against the Cavies.
After getting into Carlinville territory behind the running of senior quarterback Clayton Walch, the Panthers went to the air on fourth and 14, with Walch finding John Corso for a 15-yard gain and a first down.
With the ball on the ten, Walch found Corso again as the senior hauled in the touchdown to make it 26-6.
DeLong would pick up his third touchdown of the game on Carlinville’s next offensive play, scoring from 60 yards out to make it 33-6 and would follow that up with another, this time a 28-yard score that made it 40-6.
The points kept coming for the Cavaliers as the second half continued. Byots would find Jack Kessinger for a 25-yard score, followed by Kessinger scoring on a 45-yard interception return 41 seconds later to make it 54-6.
Fate just wasn’t shining on the Panthers as Carlinville scored on a five-yard punt return by T.J. Sims after a shanked punt from the Litchfield endzone. As the quarter ended, the score stood at 60-6 in Carlinville’s favor.
The second half went quickly, with the clock continuously running. Carlinville scored once on a four-yard run by Mason Duckels, but used its reserves throughout the second half.
Clayton Walch had 61 yards passing on eight completions and ran for five yards on 18 carries, a number that was depleted by five Carlinville sacks.
Corso’s last career game was one of his best, rushing for 40 yards on three carries with four catches for 42 yards as well. Chase Dealey, Blaine Stewart and Drew Hartzel also caught passes for Litchfield.
Dylan Maxwell and Jefferson Thomas led their team on defense in their final game. Maxwell had 11 solo tackles and seven assists, while Thomas had three solo tackles and six assists.
With the loss Litchfield finishes the season 0-9, running their losing streak to 37 games.
